情節真是大肥豬...
After Jason Giambi git the first of his two home runs on Sunday,he was greeted
on the dugout by manager Joe Torre, accepting congratulations on something that
seemed depper than a three- run jack.
"For what?"Giambi asked Torre. "I know I haven't had a hit in a while,but...."
Giambi broke out of a 4-for-38 slump at the plate with the two home runs and
tied a career high with seven RBIs on Sunday, helping the Yankees complete a
series sweep the Kansas City Royals with a 10-3 victory.
The two long balls also held greater career significance for Giambi, whose
milestone afternoon was celebrated with a three-run shot in the fifth facing
Kansas City starter Zack Greinke.
The first of Giambi's blasts on the afternoon accounted for his 1,000th career
RBI. The second -- his 23rd of the season -- notched carrer hit No. 1,500,and
-- with the Yankees'team bus idling in the parking lot -- Giambi traded two
lucky fans a signed bat and ball, respectively, for each memento.
"It's exciting,"Giambi said."Especially in Yankee Stadium with a packed house.
Ut doesn't get any better than that."
Two memorabilia items for two lucky fans. For the remaining 54,951 paying
customers at Yankee Stadium, thwy'd have to settle for showering Giambi with
a pair of curtain calls and enjoying a 10-run, 15-hit barrage on Kansws City
pitching.
That, coupled with six excellent innings from Al Leiter, wiped away the Royals'
weekend in the Bronx and completed a 6-1 homestand for New York.
Woth a seven-game road trip to Seattle and Oakland on tap,the Yankees' spirits
are high. New York leads the Wild Card chase by a half-hame over the Angels,
but more importantly, the Yankees trail the Red sox by just 1 1/2 games in the
American League East.
Giambi said the Yankees are "going to write our own ticket," and team captain
Derek Jeter left no question as to which team the Yankees were gunning for.
"Our fand don't want to see us win the wild Card,"Derek Jeter said."They want
to see us win the division."
If they do, it'll be additions like Leiter -- a July 16 pickup from the Florida
Marlins -- who can help the Yankees get there. Leiter turned in arguably his
strongest performance in nine starts for New York on Sunday, holding Kanses
City to a run on two hits through six innings before leaving with a big lead.
For Leiter, a return to New York has lifted the 39-year-old left-hander's
spirits. The ex-Met said that he hasn't pitched in a "meaningful game" since
2001, but having crossed town in a roundabout way was a boon.
