[情報] Bullpen can't hold on in Royals' loss
As he flopped into a chair in front of his locker after the Royals'8-7 loss
to the Yankees on Saturdey, every part of his body seemed weighteddiwb with
the guilt, embarrassment amd responsibility he felt after botching wgat could
have been a game-ending double play.
Unable -- or refusing -- to meet the eyes of the reporters present,Affeldt
launched into a self-flagellating tirade.
"That's a routine double play ball and for me to blow it like that's an
embarrassment," Affeldt said."I embarrassed the Kansas City Royals today....
That's a routine play right there, and I should have made it.
"The bottom line's I just blew it,"he added. "That's all."
Withe the Royals leading, 7-3, Affeldt came in to start the ninth inning and
shut the door on the Yankees. He walked the leadoff batter,Jason Giambi, before
striking out Bernie Williams swinging.
Jorge Posada then grounded an 0-2 comebacker to the mound, which Affeldt
fielded cleanly. The pitcher wheeled around to throw the ball to shortstop
Angel Berroa at second, but his toss was low and away, forcing Berroa to come
off the bag to ensure the ball stayed on the infield.
Both runners reached safel, and Affeldt allowed back-to-back singles to new
Yankee Matt Lawton and pinch-hitter Tino Martinez. Martinez drove in one run
and left runners on second and third for Derek Jeter.
Shawn Camp was called upon to quell the damage, but fell behind Jeter 2-0
and 3-1 before giving rp a two-run single.Camp induced Hideki Matsui to fly
out deep to center, but then allowed a double to Gary Sheffield, leaving the
score tied and the outcome all but inevitable.
Wth Alex Rodriguez comeing up and Jason Giambi struggling,Royals manager
Buddy Bell coould have elected to intentionally walk Rodriguez with first base
open. But Bell vehemently denied any thought of walking Rodriguez, who steped in,
worked a 2-2 count and then ripped a slider past the outstretched glove of a
diving Berroa for the game-winning hit.
"He just stayed inside it,"Camp said."He's a great hitter and great hitters do
that. I tried to go in on him the pitch before and I thought it was there.
But thinking and results are different,I guess."
The bullpen meltdown erased a solid start by rookie lefty J.P.Howell,who made
his first Major League start since July 21.
