Newly minted free agent Rudy Gay was in no condition to discuss his future
after the Spurs’ 90-86 loss to Denver in Game 7 of their first-round playoff
series.

“It’s tough, man,” Gay, whose one-year, $10.08 million contract expired as
the final buzzer sounded, said afterward.

conference if re-signing Gay would be a priority for the club.
“Sure ... We are hoping we can figure out a way to keep him here,” Popovich
said Monday.

Those close to Gay were heartened by Popovich’s comments, saying it’s also
a priority for the 13-year veteran forward to remain with the Spurs. He likes
the organization and how it has treated him and his family, likes San
Antonio, and likes going to the playoffs after making only one postseason
appearance in his first 11 seasons.
And it’s no surprise the Spurs would want the relationship to continue.

Twenty-eight months after a torn Achilles tendon threatened to end his
career, Gay ranks as one of the NBA’s most resilient players after
overcoming the injury with back-to-back productive seasons with the Spurs.
“A lot of people didn’t think I would make it back or be where I am now,”
Gay said. “I am a kid from Baltimore, Maryland. I’ve been counted out my
whole life. The injury doesn’t mean anything to me — it never will.”

After signing with the Spurs after four seasons with Sacramento, Gay played
in 57 games with six starts in 2017-18, averaging 11.7 points, 5.1 rebounds
and 1.3 assists while shooting 47.1 percent from the field, including 31.4
percent from 3-point territory.
In 2018-19, he improved across the board, logging 69 games with 51 starts and
averaging 13.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting a
career-best 50.4 percent from the field, including a career-high 40.2 percent
from beyond the arc.

Gay’s value can’t be measured solely in statistics. He is one of 12

and off-the-court leadership as a mentor and a role model to other players,
and commitment and dedication to team.

Along those lines, he moved into a reserve role late in the season without

Popovich said of Gay, who turns 33 in August.

to be with, so he makes people feel comfortable. For young guys just starting
out like Lonnie, it’s important to see the vets and be able to sit down and
have a meal with them and laugh. (Gay) does that well.”

Gay showed off his grit in the playoffs by bouncing back from a pair of
sub-par games to average 20 points on 53.6 percent shooting from the field in
Games 6-7. In Game 7, he finished with 21 points, eight rebounds, two blocks,
one assist and one steal in 33 minutes.

we wish we were still playing, but we fought hard this whole season. We have
to keep our head up.”

teammate, great dude, he deserves it.”

want to be an example for players who have had the same injury that I had. I
just want to be an example.”
