When Spurs doctors told Tony Parker he would miss two to four weeks with a strained left calf, he sought a second opinion. His own. “I was like, ‘I disagree,’” he said. “I only needed a week. That’s what I felt in my body.” In the end, Parker undersold even his own most optimistic prognosis. On Friday, five days after going down against Memphis, Parker was back in uniform to face Miami. Boosted by Parker’s surprise return, not to mention a franchise-record 17 3-pointers, the Spurs pounded the reeling Heat 125-95 before a playoff-ready crowd at the AT&T Center. In a game that made statements for both teams, the Spurs earned their 22nd consecutive home victory and extended their NBA-best record to 51-11. “It was one game, one night,” Spurs forward Tim Duncan said. “It was good to play a solid, 48-minute game.” Manu Ginobili had 20 points, starting with a layup off the opening tip, and Matt Bonner threw in 18 points on six 3-pointers — two of a season-high eight players in double figures for the Spurs. It was Parker, however, who provided fuel for the Spurs’ highest-scoring night of the season. He finished with 15 points and eight assists, numbers that don’t do justice to the havoc he caused Miami’s defense. “That’s what he’s been doing all season for us,” said Duncan, who had 14 rebounds. “Running that point-guard position, making the right plays.” For a Miami team that many expected to cruise to the top of the league once LeBron James and Chris Bosh opted to take their talents there in July, it was another faceplant on a résumé teeming with them. The Heat (43-19) are now 14-17 against teams better than .500, and 1-8 against the NBA’s top five teams that don’t call South Beach home. A night after blowing a 24-point lead in a loss against OrlandoMiami trailed by 24 points after the first quarter. The Spurs made 8 of 11 3-pointers in the frame, matching a club record, to take a 36-12 lead. Though James (26 points) and Wade (19) took turns trying to keep Miami’s boat afloat, it had taken too much water in the first 12 minutes. By the fourth, it had capsized. Asked what kind of effect Parker’s return had on the game, Miami coach Erik Spoelstra shook his head. “I don’t think it would have mattered one way or another,” Spoelstra said. “They were playing at a completely different speed than us.” Said James: “That team is clicking on all cylinders.” Part of the reason for that is the Spurs have their engine back. In a sense, the game ball Friday could have gone to the Spurs’ medical staff, which beat the two-week prognosis on Parker’s calf strain by nine days. “The foie gras and truffle treatment worked really well,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich joked. Faced with two to four weeks on the shelf, Parker insisted doctors were being overly cautious with him. By Wednesday, Parker felt well enough to play. He went through a spirited workout for the team’s medical staff and made every move and every cut pain-free. Had the Spurs had a home game that night, instead of playing in Cleveland, Parker might have suited up then. “Pop thought I was going to be out for a month, so after four days he was like, ‘It’s impossible,’?” Parker said. “I told him I was feeling great, so he trusted my judgment.” Throughout the morning Friday, the Spurs played a bit of subterfuge with Parker’s injury. He was not on the floor for the portion of shootaround open to the media. Asked about his status before the game, many of his teammates pleaded ignorance.
