Lilliputian by NBA big-man standards at 6-foot-8, Blair made his name with heart and hustle and hard-headedness — an alchemy of attributes that always played well with the lunch-bucket crowd in his hometown. When Blair led the nation in rebounding as a sophomore, or toppled UConn Goliath Hasheem Thabeet, it wasn't just a victory for Pitt. When Blair decided to turn pro at the end of that season, Dixon told him, “ You're probably not going to be drafted where you ought to be drafted. But you're used to that.” Dixon was prophetic. Because of concerns about his knees, Blair slipped to the second round. Passed over by 29 teams, Blair used that slight as motivation during his rookie year.
