Spurs' Duncan better rested, but not from skipping games

Not long before the All-Star break, during which Tim Duncan declared himself
so fit he said he would consider playing past the 2012 conclusion of his
contract, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich announced plans aimed at keeping his
team captain healthy for the playoffs.

He promised to sit Duncan frequently in one of the two games of back-to-back
sets over the final four months of the season.

When February ended with Duncan playing both games in three of four sets of
back-to-backs, Popovich looked ahead to the four sets in March and reiterated
his desire to limit his play.

“This is a month where, if we can find him some rest, we'll do it,” he said.

Things changed sometime between Jan. 13, when Popovich declared his
precautionary intentions, and the regular season finale against the Mavericks
on Wednesday, when Popovich scratched him from his starting lineup 18 minutes
before tipoff.

Of the nine sets of back-to-back games in the final four months, Duncan
played both games eight times.

The lone exception: the game in Oklahoma City in mid-January, when rookie
DeJuan Blair scored 27 points, with 21 rebounds, as Duncan's replacement in
the starting lineup. Duncan also missed two games in November with swelling
in his left ankle.
