Exploring some early offseason questions about Sixers
Bob Cooney, Daily News Sports Columnist

The hope for 76ers fans before the 2011-12 NBA season finally
began after the drawn-out lockout was that the team would be
able to improve upon the prior season's .500 record and
perhaps win a first-round playoff series and advance to the
Final Four of the Eastern Conference.
It probably didn't play out exactly the way people had
envisioned, as the Sixers barely crept into the playoffs in
the final few days of the season, drawing the eighth seed and
the Chicago Bulls in the first round - certainly not an ideal
situation for an organization looking to improve on last
season's one-and-done playoff run against the Miami Heat.
But when Bulls superstar guard Derrick Rose crumpled to the
ground with a shredded knee near the end of Game 1 and center
Joakim Noah ended his playoffs by grotesquely rolling his
ankle in Game 3, the door blew open and the Sixers scrapped
out a six-game, first-round win. The elderly Celtics found
just enough gas in their reserve tank to outlast the Sixers in
seven brutal games to advance to the conference finals.
So where does that leave the Sixers going into one of the most
anticipated offseasons in recent memory?
If the new ownership group, headed by Josh Harris, is speaking
the truth, then there will be a lot of roster shuffling this
offseason. Speculating on trades and who will go where for
whom is really just that - pure speculation, fantasy
basketball. Instead of getting into all that right now (we
have 3 months to do the trade stuff) I wanted to answer some
of the most common questions posed to me via email throughout
the season. So here goes:
Q: Why didn't Evan Turner start from the beginning of the
season and why isn't he playing point guard more?
A: It really was somewhat shocking that coach Doug Collins
didn't plug Turner into the starting lineup after his strong
training camp. Collins' reasoning was that Jodie Meeks
provided the offense with more spacing on the floor, allowing
Jrue Holiday and Andre Iguodala more space to work. Plus, the
coach was enamored with the idea of having Turner, Thaddeus
Young and Lou Williams coming off the bench. And when the team
darted to a 20-9 start, the gripes went to the back burner. By
the end of the season, Turner was starting and probably will
stay there for as long as he is a Sixer. Turner handling the
ball once in a while to create for himself is a definite
weapon and should be used as such. But this season he was in
no way ready to run the show. His ballhandling was suspect -
at best. Too many times, he was too careless with his handle.
When given the ball to start the offense, he would turn his
back on his defender to protect the ball, which limited his
ability to see everyone on the floor. Perhaps in the future
you'll see him at the point more, but this wasn't the year to
explore that.
Q: Why is Collins so in love with Andre Iguodala?
A: This question seemed directly related to fans' wanting to
see more playing time for Turner, and that's understandable.
For all the faults fans have had with Iguodala through the
years, he has as many good aspects to his game. He really did
set the tone defensively on a team that was at or near the top
of the NBA all season. Plus, publicly saying how much he
admired Iguodala probably went a long way toward getting the
most out of his starting small forward.
Q: Did Collins lose this team during the end of the season?
A: Nothing can be more damning to a coach than to have it said
that he has lost his team. And the proof that Collins did not
this season can be seen by the fact that the Sixers missed
getting to the conference finals by one win. Collins is about
as passionate a coach as there is, much like Chicago's Tom
Thibodeau and many others throughout the league. His emotions
are as apparent as the sweat he builds during games and they
last throughout the season. Sometimes that grates on players.
Just as every other coach grates on players during the season.
As he says, he is a relationship guy. Relationships take time
to build. He has built solid ones with some players, is still
building with others. Maybe he'll never form a bond with some.
But "losing the team" never appeared to be evident to someone
them every day.
Q: What happened to rookie Nik Vucevic, and why was he in
Collins' doghouse?
A: Vucevic ran into that rookie wall at the worst time of the
season - near the end. Suddenly, his soft touch around the
basket became brick-like. Defensively he wasn't just a step
slow getting to where he was supposed to be, he was about
three or four paces behind. Instead of getting both hands on a
rebound, Vucevic got into the bad habit of tapping the ball
with one hand, then trying to grab it. By that time, someone
else had already done so. Collins' way to fight through a
slump is to be more physical. But Vucevic doesn't have that
physicality in him, which exasperated the problems. With wins
down the stretch needed to make the playoffs, Collins couldn't
afford to let Vucevic play through his struggles.
Q: Will the team finally trade Iguodala?
A: Although they were on the floor together for much of the
end of the regular season and throughout the playoffs, it
appears hard for Iguodala and Turner to coexist on the floor
for a significant amount of minutes. Therefore, you would
expect to see Iguodala dealt during this offseason. But the
Sixers are so hard to play against because of their defense,
and that all starts with Iguodala, so you wonder whether
Collins wants to give up on that.
After a strong showing in the playoffs, Iguodala's status
might never be higher. And with two aching knees and a
bothersome right Achilles' tendon, you have to wonder how much
is left in him. I'd say, 60-40 he stays. Or goes.
