※ [本文轉錄自 Nuggets 看板] Allen Iverson's complicated legacy 離開後的AI,留下的是:令人五味雜陳 by Phil Sheridan http://0rz.tw/313Q6 There's probably a lesson for all of us in Allen Iverson's return to Philadelphia tonight. Can you bring yourself to feel anything but a kind of shrugging acceptance of Iverson's body of work, both as a 76er and since being traded? Can you really summon any of the passion, for him and against, that was part and parcel of Iverson's tenure here? When he is introduced before tonight's game, the crowd should and almost certainly will give Iverson a warm welcome. There will be a few boos mixed in, no doubt. But really, how excited can you get about all this? And that's the lesson. Few professional athletes have created such extreme reactions as Iverson among Philadelphia's fevered sports fans. Charles Barkley, maybe. Mike Schmidt, sort of. Terrell Owens, definitely. Donovan McNabb, at times. If all we can manage is a kind of collective shrug about Iverson now, maybe we can learn to skip a few hot-headed steps the next time some athlete gets us all worked up. Or maybe we're just hard-wired to lose our cool when it comes to sports. Maybe that's part of the fun. Iverson certainly raised the temperature around here. He was a once-a-generation talent, a gritty, fearless gamer who threw his tiny body around among the NBA giants and carried an overachieving Sixers team to the NBA Finals. Iverson was a selfish, team-wrecking coach-killer who relied on his natural skills and cheated himself, his teammates and his fans of what he could have accomplished if he'd worked harder and understood the value of "practice." If you paid attention to the Sixers at all during Iverson's time here, you almost certainly think one of those statements is gospel truth and the other is completely irrational. That's how sharp the divide was here. The fact that there are elements of truth in both points of view helps explain why Iverson was such a fascinating character to watch from the moment he arrived from Georgetown to the day he was dealt to Denver. It is oddly comforting that he comes to town as a member of a team that has a better record than the Sixers, but with a lower conference seeding. At the moment, the Sixers are in the Eastern Conference playoff field. The Nuggets are out in the much more competitive West. But then there is the body count. To appease (or, if you prefer, get the most out of) Iverson while he was here, the Sixers bent themselves into every possible shape. The challenge of building around a 6-foot, "bony as hell" MVP and working around his singular philosophy about "practice" meant a lot of turnover over the years. Larry Hughes and Tim Thomas and Jerry Stackhouse, Theo Ratliff and Dikembe Mutombo, Toni Kukoc and Keith Van Horn, Derrick Coleman and Glenn Robinson and Chris Webber. Webber。 Randy Ayers and Larry Brown and Chris Ford and Jim O'Brien. Oh, and finally, Billy King. They all came and went either because of or in spite of Iverson's presence here. They either couldn't coach him, couldn't bear to coach him any more, couldn't play with him, or were deemed by management to be unable to play with him. As for King, he was left to engineer the shift from the Iverson Era to Whatever's Next, then was fired before he had a chance to complete the transition. If King waited too long to flip that switch, and he probably did, the suspicion lingers that he had little choice. In Comcast Nation, Iverson was staying as long as he put fans in the seats. Once attendance began to slip, so did the corporate commitment to No. 3. When Iverson behaved precisely as he had for all his previous years here, it suddenly was considered unacceptable, and he was traded. 在 Compast Nation(?) Ironically, the Wachovia Center probably will be full tonight - the I-95 mess notwithstanding - for two reasons. One, the people who got tired of watching Iverson play hard while the Sixers lost will want to see him one more time. Two, the team he left behind is playing hard and starting to win. As a - well, you know - team. (按陰陽譯者已經快凍未條、小朋友你給我翻這什麼文!XD) It is undeniable. These Sixers are a lot easier to like and a lot more boring than the teams that were built around Iverson. This group reflects its head coach, Maurice Cheeks, and its veteran point guard, Andre Miller, in the way it approaches the game. It couldn't be less like the Iverson teams if everyone wore white shorts and started playing cricket. But the current Sixers are a lot less interesting, too. There is no soap opera around the team, no central figure for everyone to love or hate. There is no Allen Iverson.

03/20 14:37,
Comcast Nation
03/20 14:37

03/20 14:37,
Wachovia Center
