U21 Race to Milan: Zverev, Tsitsipas and Shapovalov lead the field

The updated U21 Race to Milan list has brought nothing new in the leading
positions, with the Top 6 players keeping the position they had a week ago,
after Wimbledon. Alexander Zverev will be back in action next week when he
has to defend the title in Washington and as long he stays in contention for
the place at the ATP Finals it is unlikely we will see him in Milan, just
like in 2017. The German has collected 3585 points so far in 2018 and the
first player behind him is Stefanos Tsitsipas, the only player besides Zverev
who clinched more than 1000 points so far this year.
After a great Wimbledon run, Stefanos decided to take a rest and skip Bastad
and Hamburg, aiming to make a return in Washington. Denis Shapovalov is still
third after a poor grass season (only two wins in four events) and he will
join Alexander and Stefanos in Washington as well. Frances Tiafoe has reached
the third round at Wimbledon and he is in Washington entry list too, having
to compete at another home event in Atlanta this week where he stands as the
5th seed. Alex de Minaur has an identical path, already scoring a win over
Hubert Hurkacz in Atlanta and signing to play Washington too in order to get
closer to Tiafoe on the list, trailing 123 points at the moment.
Taylor Fritz is safe in the 6th place at the moment, hoping to win more points
in Atlanta where he faces Newport finalist Ramkumar Ramanathan. After being
sidelined for three months due to a back injury, Andrey Rublev returned at
Umag last week where he failed to defend the title, defeating Felix
Auger-Aliassime before losing to Robin Haase. With these 45 points, Rublev
has passed Jaume Munar for the seventh place, just 19 points ahead of the
Spaniard. Andrey is the 4th seed in Gstaad this week and he will travel to
Washington to join other U21 stars next week in the chase for 500 points.
Munar has lost in the opening round of Bastad to Casper Ruud, the 9th player
on our list, and he made a winning start in Gstaad, adding more points to his
tally and increasing the gap over Ruud who has reached the quarter-final in
Bastad last week but fell in the opening round of ATP 500 event in Hamburg to
Diego Schwartzman. Hubert Hurkacz and Reilly Opelka are 10th and 11th and by
far the youngest player in the Top 15 is Felix Auger-Aliassime who scored one
win in Umag before losing to Rublev. Felix is back in action in Gstaad and he
already passed the first round test, earning more points and setting his eyes
on one of the spots that lead to Milan Masters in November. Top 15 U21 Race
