Beltran expected to make Giants debut vs. Phillies

The Giants aren't at AT&T Park, but don't be surprised if there's a
rolled-out red carpet leading into the visitor's clubhouse at Citizens Bank
Park on Thursday.
Carlos Beltran, the most sought-after impact bat of this year's non-waiver
Trade Deadline, will reportedly make his Giants debut in Thursday's series
finale against the Phillies. San Francisco acquired Beltran on Wednesday from
the Mets in exchange for No. 1 pitching prospect Zack Wheeler.
Beltran will play right field and immediately move into the middle of a
lineup that sorely needed a bat.
"Our offense has been inconsistent and we need some help," Giants manager
Bruce Bochy said. "There was a little sense of urgency to see if we could do
something to help this offense get going."
Bochy said he's excited to add a player of Beltran's caliber.
"He's a complete player," Bochy said. "Carlos has all the tools that you look
for in a player."
Trying to spoil Beltran's Giants debut and win the series for the Phillies is
right-hander Kyle Kendrick. Five of Kendrick's last seven appearances have
come as a starter, with him going 2-0 with a 3.21 ERA in that role.
Giants: Starter TBD
Tim Lincecum, originally scheduled to start Tuesday's series opener, is still
questionable for Thursday's game. The right-hander has been suffering from a
stomach illness. Bochy said the club won't decide who will pitch the series
finale until Lincecum arrives at the park Thursday morning. The skipper also
didn't want to guess whether the two-time National League Cy Young Award
winner would pitch.
"I'd hate to put odds on it because I really don't know," Bochy said
Wednesday. "We'll have to make that decision at some point tomorrow.
Obviously we don't want him pitching if he's washed out."
If Lincecum is unable to go, right-hander Ryan Vogelsong likely will start.
Vogelsong, one of the feel-good stories of the 2011 baseball season, was
released by the Phillies on July 15 of last year.
‧ Starter Matt Cain earned his first regular-season win against the Phillies
on Wednesday. The right-hander entered the game 0-3 with a 6.23 ERA in five
starts against Philadelphia. He now has beaten every NL team.
Phillies: Next to make a move?
With the Giants landing Beltran, it's the rest of baseball's turn to make a
move, including the Phillies. Like the Giants, Philadelphia is looking to add
an impact right-handed bat. The Phillies have been linked to Houston's Hunter
Pence and White Sox outfielder Carlos Quentin, but special assistant Pat
Gillick admitted Wednesday the Phillies "might have to up the ante because
there's one less guy out there."
While manager Charlie Manuel would like to add another piece, he said he
would be OK if it doesn't happen.
"I feel very comfortable playing with what we've got in some ways," Manuel
said. "We've been real, real fortunate in that we've plugged players in and
they've helped us win. ... But at the same time, if we turn you loose and let
you go, that would be the only way to tell how good you're going to be."
‧ Chase Utley's inside-the-park home run Tuesday was the third of his
career, tying him with Bobby Abreu, Carl Crawford, David DeJesus and Jimmy
Rollins for the most among active players.
‧ First baseman Ryan Howard has 10 or more career home runs against 11 of
the 15 other NL teams, including the Giants.
Worth noting
1. Howard needs three hits to reach 1,000 for his career.
2. San Francisco's bullpen has posted a 0.59 second-half ERA.
3. The next home victory by a Phillies starter will be their 50th of the year
at Citizens Bank Park.
