自翻
On the final day, they attempted to play nice with one another.
Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said all the right things about
respecting Rick Adelman and finding these decisions difficult.
Adelman took the high road, too,
saying he'd enjoyed his four seasons coaching the Rockets
and would espe-cially remember these last two seasons fondly.
He didn't have the NBA's most talented club,
but his guys played with heart and toughness and were a coach's dream.
Adelman
As divorces go, this was one of the nicest ever.
In saying their goodbyes, the two parties made it clear they still care for
one another
and will remember the good times. They'll write often and speak sweetly at
reunions.
If you didn't know better,
you'd swear they were doing it for the children
or because they'd, you know, grown apart. And this, of course, would be silly.
The Rockets didn't want Adelman coaching their basketball team anymore.
They actually hadn't wanted him for two or three months
but held off making a change because this team was going nowhere, and why
bother?
Likewise, Adelman had tired of the constant roster changes and injuries.
He'd come here to coach Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady,
and except for a few stretches, he never got to do that.
All Adelman wanted to do was see how many games he could win with the players
he had left.
He'd long ago established himself as one of the best NBA coaches ever
and figured that with enough time, he could turn almost any sow's ear into a
silk purse.
But Morey never let him.
Just when Adelman would get comfortable with one group,
Morey would make another trade, change the mix again,
force the coach to constantly take two steps back before taking one step
forward.
Career stations different
They were at different places in their careers.
Morey is in his fourth season as general manager and still trying to prove
himself to a boss,
Leslie Alexander, who is, well, slightly on the demanding side.
The Rockets are different from the Astros and Texans.
Their mission statement isn't to be respectable.
It's to win big, to compete for champi-onships, to be relevant.
Adelman is long past proving himself.
If the Rockets want to go on a five-year rebuilding plan
as Morey constantly searches for impact players to replace McGrady and Yao,
he's not interested.
Adelman
Adelman
GM routinely tinkering
Looking back on it now, we should have seen this divorce coming,
because these two men have disagreed on virtually every move.
There was one draft day a couple of years ago when Morey summoned Adelman
and told him he was going to trade a chunk of his roster for a dazzling
European point guard named Ricky Rubio.
"He could help us win a championship someday," Morey told him,
"but we might win 20 games next season."
Adelman was stunned.
Adelman
"Are you trying to get me fired?" he asked.
That trade fell through, but there were similar stories.
For instance, at the trade deadline two years ago,
Morey told Adelman he was dealing his veteran point guard, Rafer Alston,
and turning the team over to Kyle Lowry and Aaron Brooks,
two kids who'd barely played in the NBA.
Alston,
Morey was constantly tinkering, trying to make the Rockets better,
trying to position them to win a championship.
Adelman may have appreciated the mission, but he wanted stability.
Morey
Adelman
Finally, a few weeks ago,
Morey traded Shane Battier and Brooks at the deadline for draft picks and
players
who'd washed out in other places.
Morey believed the draft picks might help build a great team down the road,
but Adelman knew he'd be long gone by then.
So now the Rockets have decided there's a better coach out there.
In discussing the job, they say they want someone driven to succeed,
someone great at communicating and coaching defense,
and someone willing to help the franchise develop younger players.
The Rockets believe they'll be a playoff team next season if they can add a
center,
but they want to be so much more than that.
If Orlando's Stan Van Gundy becomes available, he'd almost certainly jump to
the top of the charts.
Otherwise, Morey is prepared to begin checking names off a list he has spent
months putting together.
Jeff Van Gundy? Nope
JVG?
As for Jeff Van Gundy, who was Adelman's predecessor with the Rockets,
he's tanned, rested and ready to coach again. Unfortunately, it's not going
to be in Houston.
He burned too many bridges up and down the masthead in his previous stint,
and while there's a very good chance someone less competent will be the
eventual choice,
the Rockets are willing to take it.
At the moment,
all they know for sure is they don't want Rick Adelman coaching their team,
and that's where this process begins.
