Rockets believe they have "one of the best coaches ever."
It's time to figure out how to keep him.

自翻
Sometime next week,
Rockets owner Leslie Alexander will start the "process"
of deciding what to do with Rick Adelman and his coaching staff.
This is an important decision. It is a serious question.
There is, however,
a sense that he will be asking the wrong question of himself and Daryl Morey.
He does not need to ask if the Rockets should bring back Adelman;
he must ask what they need to do to get him back.
All along it seemed that they were both waiting for the other to make the
first move,
but with Adelman heading to free agency, the Rockets should know by now
what they have and what they would lose should he and his staff not return.
I did not agree with every decision Adelman made this season.
No coach ever will make every move as someone else would.
And no human has been perfect.
I have also yet to find anyone outside the organization that can even guess
why this is in question.
That Adelman, who on Saturday tied Bill Fitch for eighth in coaching wins
with 944,
has continued to squeeze winning seasons out of this roster has been
remarkable.
It is not just that the Rockets had Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady for part of
just one of Adelman's seasons,
he had one or both going in and out of the lineup, wasting time to build with
what he had.
Giant chunks of the Rockets roster sat next to him throughout his four
seasons,
yet every year, the Rockets improved through the season to a team
far better than the sum of its healthy parts.
There has not been championship contention or even a playoff spot the past
two seasons,
though there was a 22-game winning streak,
the only playoff series win in 17 years and a seven-game series with the
Lakers.
But neither the highs nor the lows are the point.
Adelman was hired to win.
That's what Alexander wants, how he frames his decision-making.
He wants to know what will give his team its best chance to win.
If he wanted something else, then he should make that clear.
He has, however, been abundantly clear about what he wants and expects.
Adelman
Alexander wants to win and he does not just talk about it or wish for it.
He will spend if he believes it will help the Rockets win.
He will buy draft picks, hire a huge staff, operate a D-League team,
scout everything and everywhere - all to win.
He put it well last month in Miami.
"The decision I'm going to make is the decision
I think is the best for the future of the team to win," Alexander said.
"That's the only thing I care about, nothing else."
Then what else is there to talk about?
Only seven coaches in the history of basketball have won more games than
Adelman.
Of the top 10, only two had a better winning percentage.
Of the coaches in Rockets franchise history,
none had a better winning percentage than Adelman has these past four seasons.
"He's one the best coaches ever and we have him here in Houston,"
Rockets center Chuck Hayes said, expressing the opinion widespread in the
locker room.
"The way we started the season and the way he's taken the pieces
and worked with them and put them together, man,
we're privileged to play for one of the best coaches ever."
This was a disappointing season for many reasons,
but that does not mean that an organization that prides itself for looking
beyond the surface
should ignore everything and let disappointment drive its decision-making.
All things considered, winning 42 to 44 games this season
should be considered an accomplishment.
Actually, Alexander said last season what he needs to say next week.
"I think he's done a terrific job,"
Alexander said then of his plan to extend Adelman's contract to this season.
"He's taken a team that has lost two key starters and he melded the team and
he's won.
That's what we want here. He only cares about -- which I love -- the team
and winning."
In that case, he should already know who he should have as coach next season.
Now he can move on to figuring out how to make it happen.
