自翻
If you like these Rockets, catch them while you can. Change is coming,
possibly dramatic change.
The Rockets aren't good enough as they're configured,
so general manager Daryl Morey is working furiously to change the
configuration.
His team needs talent, size, defense and rebounding.
Carmelo Anthony appears to be at the top of his wish list,
and Morey would trade for him without any guarantee of signing him to a
long-term contract.
He knows Anthony wants to play for the Knicks, but at this point will take
his chances.
Morey also has asked about Chris Paul, Josh Smith, DeAndre Jordan, Anderson
Varejao and a long list of others.
Everyone on the Rockets' roster is available as the NBA's February 24th
trading deadline approaches,
but some are more likely to go than others.
For instance, Shane Battier.
He's a poster boy for what we'd want every professional athlete to be.
Morey likes Battier as much as the rest of us, but this is where real life
sticks its ugly mug in.
Battier.
Morey
Battier is exactly the kind of player good teams love.
He brings two ingredients — defense and smarts - in short supply,
and he's a 10-year veteran in the final year of his contract.
Battier
So Battier's greater value to the Rockets could be in acquiring a draft pick
or young player.
But Battier is just one example. The Rockets could be on their way to missing
the playoffs for a second straight season,
so Morey feels the pressure to change the mix.
Players understand the situation,
and the uncertainty doesn't make coach Rick Adelman's job any easier until
the trading deadline passes.
To add to the uncertainty, Adelman's contract is also up after the season,
and even though he has done a good job under extraordinarily tough
circumstances,
owner Leslie Alexander could go searching for a new coach.
Turning point? Yao injury
This season has been disappointing on so many levels it's hard to count them
all.
First, there was Yao Ming's latest - and possibly last - injury.
If he could have given the Rockets 30 quality minutes a night, everything
would look different.
He would have transformed a bad defensive team into one of the NBA's best.
He would occupy two defenders down the stretch, making it easier for everyone
to score.
In other words, Yao would have made the Rockets a playoff team.
OK, you're tired of looking back.
Tracy McGrady and Yao probably are gone forever,
and it's time for the Rockets to move on.
This offseason, for the first time since Morey became GM four years ago,
he won't be limited by salaries or injuries.
Morey has done a nice job assembling a decent roster without benefit of a
premium draft pick or big-ticket free agent.
Morey
But the Rockets are in last place, and no one cares how the sausage is made.
These next two weeks are important to Morey's legacy, and this summer will be
even more important.
He has the draft picks, marketable talent and salary-cap space to upgrade the
roster.
Morey would prefer to do something now, and that brings us to the rest of
what has gone wrong.
He ran the numbers the other day and came up with this statistic:
The Rockets' starting lineup is the NBA's fourth-best in point differential.
Morey
The bench? Not so much.
Aaron Brooks has had a hugely disappointing season.
First, he got hurt, and when he returned he didn't get his starting job back.
Brooks hasn't liked this, and he finally snapped Saturday and walked off the
floor.
If there's a silver lining to his tantrum, it's that it forced everyone to
put their cards on the table.
Brooks
Brooks is unhappy about not starting, but Adelman believes Brooks hasn't
played well enough to justify it.
This trouble was a long time coming.
Brooks wasn't happy that Lowry got a longtime contract last summer and he
didn't.
And he's not going to earn that contract with diminishing production.
Not seizing the moment
It would be unfair to blame everything that has gone wrong on Brooks.
Just as troubling is that no young player
- not Jordan Hill, not Chase Budinger - has taken advantage of his
opportunity.
If you're looking for reasons to be optimistic, there are plenty.
First, there's Alexander. He has money to spend and is willing to spend it.
In a league where so many teams are financially strapped, the Rockets have
the flexibility to make a deal.
And there's Morey.
He has assembled a bunch of nice pieces and has positioned the Rockets to be
dramatically better this summer,
if not before. He understands it's a bottom-line business, and at the moment,
the bottom line is ugly.
But change is coming, hopefully sooner than later.
然後是Morey.
