Yao to star in Rockets' remake of '2 …
September 16, 2010
Yao to star in Rockets' remake of '24.' Here's how to make it work
As certain as the Rockets were about how much (or little) Yao Ming will play
every game this season — 24 minutes and not a minute more —
they do not have a plan yet about when the minutes will come.
Those decisions will come when Rockets coach Rick Adelman is back in town and
gets to chat with Keith Jones and presumably the medical staff
as a whole about how he would like to spend his 24 minutes of Yao Ming.
Yao
My solution might not fly with the doctors, but it seems right.
Give Yao the game's first six to eight minutes. He takes you to the first
time out. He helps get off to a good start. And then he takes a seat.
That's it for the first half.
Brad Miller, come on down. Depending on matchups, Jordan Hill could pick up a
few minutes in the middle the rest of the half. Maybe the Rockets
add another center to the mix and juggle things depending on need that night.
Yao, however, can take the rest of the half off.
When the second half begins, he would then have 16 to18 minutes left to play.
Adelman can use him roughly as he always has in the second half,
playing the same sort of second-half minutes as most All-Star centers.
The Rockets could establish a pretty reliable, consistent rotation. Adelman
can return Yao to the game to make sure he gets to his 24 minutes
at the final buzzer, rather than having to pull him when he gets to the magic
number. Yao can be there for those final minutes, serving as the
closer inside the Rockets lacked last season and every team covets.
Of course, the Rockets would have to hope they never get to overtime this
season, but for the most part, playing Yao 16 second-half minutes
can make the playing time restriction manageable, and nowhere near the issue
down the stretch of games it might have seemed when Keith Jones said Yao's
24 minutes will be a limit, not an average.
Either way, it is clear that the Rockets are committed to this. They know
they can only guess if this is necessary or even a solution.
The "evidence" that Yao was hurt in the season in which he averaged his most
minutes is at best circumstantial. He was also hurt the season
his minutes were cut and dramatically reduced in practices and pregame
workouts. He never missed a game back in the seasons in which he played
extensively through the offseasons. He was hurt in the seasons following the
summers he took off.
The Rockets, however, have every reason to be "cautious" as Daryl Morey put
it. At this point, why not? It worked for Zydrunas Ilgauskas after
his similar surgery. It can work for Yao. And he could be even more effective
per minute when he plays just 24, knowing he has no reason to pace
himself.
There have been many assumptions since the story was posted yesterday that
the Rockets' September intentions might not translate to November
actions.
Game on the line. It's just a possession. Give Yao another half minute.
What's the harm?
I saw no inclination that when the Rockets said Yao would be done when he
hits 24 minutes that they did not really mean it.
The wiggle room might be that at some point Tom Clanton might revise his
recommendation. Unless that happens, however, the Rockets seem pretty
determined to stick to the time limit.
The decision to hold him out of the second half of back-to-backs will
definitely be visited during the season. They have not decided when they
will consider letting Yao play a second game in as many nights, but they will
start the season playing only one game in back-to-backs.
Jones did say the time limit will be revisited for the playoffs.
Cutting eight minutes off Yao's typical 32 minutes should not keep the
Rockets from getting there. But if it helps, it could be a
half-full/half-empty question. The Rockets are not losing Yao for eight
minutes they thought they'd have him. They are gaining him for 24 more
than they had him last season. Give him 16 minutes in the second half, and
that should be about right.
