Kevin Martin and his personal coach plot the return to "attack mode."
If David Thorpe had marketing on his mind, he could have spoken of the great
success of a summer spent in a gym with his prized pupil, Kevin Martin.
Thorpe, Martin's personal coach for nine years and an ESPN.com columnist, has
played an important role in Martin's success as an overachiever out of
Western Carolina, something less than a hotbed for NBA talent. Martin had
returned to Houston this week, having been in Tampa to work with Thorpe from
May 10 through Sept. 2, and sounded so determined and so confident, Thorpe
had his chance to explain his role in Martin's planned revival.
Thorpe, however, gave Martin the credit. He said Martin has had the best
summer shooting 3s he has ever had. He said Martin has embraced the Rockets
training program. He pointed to Martin's dramatically improved athleticism
and finishing ability. More than anything, however, Thorpe said Martin's
success was largely due to his improved health and hard work.
"There were two issues," Thorpe said. "Basically in his last full season in
Sacramento, he was attacking basket and was tackled by Anthony Randolph. He
landed incredibly awkwardly on his ankle. When he was rehabbing the ankle for
a sprain, which should have been a 10-day issue, he found out he had severely
bruised the ankle. He was not rehabbing that correctly, impacting his
athleticism. He was in pain when he returned and kept re-aggravating it and
re-aggravating it. He was up all night in pain some nights.
"That summer, it was really hard to get him back to being athletic. I don't
think he had another dunk that season. He was in tremendous pain. Then last
year, Allen Iverson undercut him, I believe unintentionally, and he broke his
wrist and shot poorly because of the broken wrist.
"This is the first time since November, '08 he has been 100 percent
physically (with the ankle) and the wrist feels great.
"I'd love to say it is all from the hard work. He worked hard, but the
biggest thing is he is totally healthy and back to being a really, really
athletic player. He looked like a 21-year-old the way he was running and
jumping and sprinting. The results were phenomenal. He never shot like this.
He never had a better summer shooting the ball than this summer. I'm more
hopeful than I ever have been before about him shooting the 3.
"He wants to be an all star, wants to be one of best shooting guards in the
league. He knows he has things to improve. He knows he has to stay healthy.
He's not afraid of the challenge."
Martin will tell you that Thorpe had something to do with all that, and
Thorpe does admit that he tweaked Martin's famously unusual shooting motion.
When Martin first got in the league, the Kings had Martin lower the ball to
his hip to start his shooting stroke and as a rule Thorpe said he defers to
the NBA teams that employ his player. But as Martin has gotten stronger since
then, the wind up has become unnecessary.
His motion remains distinctive, but this summer he has moved to starting his
shot at a more conventional position.
"The results were phenomenal," Thorpe said. "He never shot like this, never
had a better summer shooting the ball than this summer.
"It's fair to say I'm not an expert in much, but I know what good shooter
looks like and I never had a shooter shoot like Kevin this summer."
This might explain the confidence from Martin.
"I'll be very different," Martin said. "I'll be back to my pre-wrist injury
form. I'm feeling better, more like I was before the injury. That was the
main goal, to get back there. My goal when I got traded was to fit in with a
great group of guys, not try to be that person that came in here thinking he
was going to take every shot. That fitting-in phase is definitely over. Now
I'm ready to get back to being myself.
"Nobody has seen the real me, yet. I'm ready to take off."
Martin said much of the difference will be attitude. He was the Rockets'
leading scorer last season, but said he was trying to fit. This season, he
pledged to be in "attack mode" and said that mentality will work well with
Yao Ming because it will draw fouls and allow Yao to spend more time on the
line.
"We just open up a lot of things for each other," Martin said. "If I'm in
attack mode, that makes it easier for him going to the line, night in, night
out and he doesn't have to take a banging down there. I don't have to take 20
shots to score 30 points. I can get 30 points on 12, 13 shots. Sometimes it
doesn't look like I'm doing much, but that's the most efficient way to help
the team overall.
"I was down there last week and we talked a bit. He's very upbeat about
things. We're both excited to play with each other. He feels like he'll have
an elite 2-guard, and I know I'll have elite center. We're ready to work hard
and get back to the playoffs and do some damage there."
Martin arrived in Houston this week, launch a website (Kmart12.com) Tuesday
evening and will be featured in Wednesday's announcement of the team's annual
marketing campaign, all examples of him feeling far more at home than he ever
did last season.
His strong off-season aside, he will need to star for the Rockets to do some
post-season "damage." He will have to finish better, shoot better and more
than anything will have to defend much, much better than he did last season.
Thorpe, however, might have a point. All that could come with better health
and a summer of hard work. At least, with the start of camp a little more
than a week away, that's the plan.
"A lot of people are sleeping on us, but there is nothing wrong with that,"
Martin said. "Other than Yao, everybody on this team was slept on entering
the league and look where we are today. We're very confident and ready to go."
