Well, the trade deadline has passed and as expected, there was a whole lot of
movement in the NBA.
Houston was part of the biggest trade of the year. In a 3 way trade, Houston
received Kevin Martin and Hilton Armstrong from Sacramento, plus Jared
Jeffries and Jordan Hill from New York. The NY Knicks received Tracy McGrady
from Houston and Sergio Rodriguez from Sacramento. Sac received Carl Landry
and Joey Dorsey, both ex-teammates of mine from Houston.
It’s hard to say who got the best of the trade. I suppose each team got
what they were after. Houston got a perimeter scorer (Martin), Sacramento
stayed young and got an inside scorer (Landry) and New York was able to get
another expiring contract (McGrady and his $23 million), to be able to
compete in the free agent market next year.
Let’s remember that a lot of superstars have expiring contracts after this
season and are free agents in July. Dwayne Wade and Lebron James are the
main attractions. To be able to sign those guys, teams have to have enough
salary cap room to be able to sign a max veteran salary and with this trade,
the Knicks have guaranteed themselves the possibility of signing at least 2
stars, which is really surprising.
However, in the midst of all of the trades and contract ramifications of
them, the most interesting thing to me was the HOW it all happened. We got
on the airplane after beating Milwaukee and nothing had happened until then.
When we landed, however, all of a sudden everyone was leaving the airplane
and nobody knew what was up, but Carl Landry waived at all of us (I imagine
he knew first what had happened) and we were all saying “why are you waiving?
”. It was surreal. Nobody knew who was coming nor who was going….
When we got home at 2 am, we found out that the trade was waiting final
approval from New York to sign off on their part of the trade, which would
obviously affect the final destination of the respective players. Finally,
the following morning New York officially became part of the deal and it was
decided where everyone was headed. All of this happened a few minutes before
the trade deadline.
In past years we’ve also had trades, but this year was different, cause I
experienced it a little more intensely… maybe because I feel very close to
Carl, on and off the court. Maybe I was nervous about being included in a
deal or something, but I was definitely more anxious about this trade
deadline than past ones…
There were also some interesting trades in the rest of the NBA. The arrival
of Antawn Jamison to Cleveland is easily the biggest impact trade of the
season…. You get the feeling that the Cavs are going to be the team to beat
in the East.
Boston, who was courting various players for quite a while ended up only
taking Nate Robinson, the 3 time slam dunk champion. Portland, who was
desperately looking for a post player to fill the void left by the injuries
of Oden and Pryzibilla got Marcus Camby, who is a definite guarantee at that
position.
I spoke with our GM, Daryl Morey, about several topics, but in particular
about the item I spoke about in a recent blog I wrote about the argument we
had in our locker room about whether a coach could be traded…. He said they
can be traded! I was completely surprised by that. I thought it was
something silly that someone said that was completely unfounded, but it turns
out to be true. Not only is it possible, but he gave me examples of when it
has happened. One example of this which was actually pretty important was
when Miami traded Stan Van Gundy to Orlando for a couple of draft picks a few
years ago.
Turns out that they can also trade GM’s. The only difference between
trading coaches and GM’s from trading players is that the coaches and GM’s
can reject a trade if they don’t want to accept the move.
In summary, for the rest of the season we can all just relax and concentrate
on playing and winning, which is the job we’re more comfortable with.

Kevin
