West swollen with contenders. Rockets find few pushovers in conference ranks.

Rockets forward Shane Battier would seem to know better, but he can't help
himself, especially this season.

The standings are clogged with Western Conference playoff contenders, with
far too many teams vying for too few spots to know what to want when those
teams play one another. So Battier waits for those nights the Hornets or Jazz
or even the improving Thunder play an Eastern Conference team and then cheers
for help.
西區季後賽卡位戰如火如荼進行中, 蘿蔔太多洞太少, 所以每當這幾隻隊伍比賽時我們總

“Right now, when we're not playing an Eastern Conference team, I've become a
huge Eastern Conference proponent,” Battier said. “For so many years, the
Eastern Conference let me down. They never seem to get me a win we need.”

It would seem early for scoreboard watching, but as often as the Western
Conference has featured well more than eight teams worthy of a postseason
spot, this season has become unusually deep with playoff contenders. The
Rockets have been in the thick of the race all season, but in seventh place,
are just a half-game from the lottery.
現在就盯著每天比賽的計分板好像還太早了, 偏偏西區總是看起來有超過八個蘿蔔有實力
進到洞裡, 這一季有實力的蘿蔔數量又特別多, 火箭隊這一季就一直在跟這些蘿蔔搶洞,

“There's a bunch,” Rockets center Chuck Hayes said. “Everybody's fighting
for positioning. From three down, it's pretty tight in there. The margin for
error is pretty small. You end up cheering for different teams. (Monday) I
was cheering for Philadelphia. Go Sixers.”
"實在是太多蘿蔔啦!" Hayes表示. "大家都在搶洞蹲, 第三個洞之後的競爭特別激烈, 大

The competition to earn a Western Conference playoff spot appears likely to
be so tight that there are as many teams with better than .500 records in the
Southwest Division as in the Eastern Conference.
在西區要搶進季後賽是在是太艱困了, 你看看, 光西南組超過五成勝率的球隊就和整個
東區一樣多了, 嘖嘖...
In the East, only the Celtics, Cavaliers, Magic and Hawks have winning
records against Western Conference teams. In the West, nine teams have
winning records against Eastern Conference teams, with the Rockets and Kings
at .500 against the other conference.
在東區, 只有超賽, 騎士, 魔術和老鷹有贏過西區的球隊. 但在西區, 卻有九隻球隊曾經

The difference is in the middle of the pack, where many of the West's
familiar lottery teams (the Thunder and Grizzlies) have become contenders for
playoff spots, and two of last season's worst teams (the Kings and Clippers)
have improved.

It's a great opportunity to separate ourselves from the pack.”

Other than the Lakers, who have the league's best record and a 4½-game lead
on the second-place Mavericks, just 5½ games separate the next 10 teams in
the West.

“You try not to, but you can't help but look at it,” Rockets guard Kyle
Lowry said. “You look at our conference, even our division, and everyone is
bunched together. It just shows how good teams are in the Western Conference.
Every night you know you'll get a good test. You got a couple teams around 10
wins (Minnesota and Golden State) but other than that, you have everybody
bunched together.”

The Rockets have the standings posted near the Toyota Center practice court
where players chart their workout schedules. It does not take a look at the
standings for the difference to be clear.
火箭隊的練習場附近就貼著戰績表, 而且還跟球員們的訓練進度貼在一起(...), 無怪乎
大家都無法不察覺我們與其他球隊的戰績差異...
Coming off a triple-overtime win over the Timberwolves, the team with the
worst record in the West, the Rockets would have reason to consider the depth
improved. But the quality of many teams has been clear with the play of teams
in the middle of the pack.
我們用了3個OT才從西區爐主灰狼手中拿下勝利, 可見得西區球隊的深度的確是一直在進
步. 而且許多球隊的品質其實都已經達到了中段球隊的程度了.
“There is a different feel,” Battier said. “Just watching them play, teams
are more confident at this point. Everyone feels they have a legitimate shot
to win.
"感覺很不一樣," Battier說 "看他們打球就發現他們越來越有自信了. 大家現在都認同

“It's tough to go to Memphis now and get a win. It's tough to go play the
Clippers and get a win. It's tough to go to Oklahoma City and get a win,
tough to go to New Orleans and get a win.

是去 New Orleans打贏黃蜂統統都不容易."
“The middle class, especially at home, is a real bear to deal with right
now. Usually, by this time, some teams start to fall by the wayside. I really
can't count anybody out — a couple teams — but a lot of teams still think
they have a shot to get in the playoffs.”

That tends to make it difficult for a typical playoff-contending player to
develop rooting interests, but like many fans, there is always hope that the
rest of the East could turn things around.
對於季後賽的常客球員來說, 跑去幫其他隊伍加油實在是不太容易, 但是就像許多球迷一
樣, 我們總是會抱著一些希望, 希望東區其他球隊可以改變一下情勢.
