Rockets match Bobcats' offer to Carl Landry
By JONATHAN FEIGEN Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle
The Rockets on Thursday matched the offer that the Charlotte Bobcats made
to Carl Landry, the Chronicle's Richard Justice reports.
□□□Thursday morning's report on Carl Landry:
The Rockets□long, difficult negotiation stalemate with restricted free agent
Carl Landry is over.
Now comes the tough part.
With next week□ start of training camp bearing down, Landry on Wednesday
signed an offer sheet for a contract worth $9 million over three seasons
with the Charlotte Bobcats. The last season of the contract is at the team
□ option. If the Rockets wish to retain Landry, they have up to one week
from the receipt of the offer sheet to match the proposal.
Rockets general manager Daryl Morey did not comment about the offer or the
Rockets□plans.
Morey had said since the end of last season that he would match any offer
Landry received up to the value of the mid-level exception. He avoided spending
that salary-cap exception, keeping it to retain Landry and to sign this
year□ second-round pick, Joey Dorsey.
The offer sheet Landry received with the Bobcats will not prevent the Rockets
from retaining him or signing Dorsey, but Landry□ contract would push the
Rockets□player payroll past the luxury-tax threshold unless they make cost
-cutting moves.
The threat of the luxury tax is not expected to be the determining factor
in the Rockets□decision. They had expressed concern with Landry□ right
knee, asking him to undergo more complete and invasive medical testing and
potentially giving them reason to balk at matching the Bobcats□offer.
They did, however, eventually make an offer worth roughly $5.4 million over
three seasons, which would indicate the threat of paying the luxury tax
might not drive the decision. The Rockets began each of the past two seasons
past the tax line, though midseason trades prevented them from having to
pay a luxury tax.
Complicating matters
Signing center Dikembe Mutombo could be complicated by Landry□ offer, though
Mutombo could choose to wait to see how the Rockets□roster shakes out before
signing.
Landry, acquired on a draft-night deal with the Seattle SuperSonics in 2007
, averaged 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds in 42 games as a rookie. He made 61
.6 percent of his shots and was an NBA All-Rookie second-team selection.
He helped seal a Rockets playoff win with a last-second blocked shot and
rebound at Utah.
□andry is an emerging NBA talent, as evidenced by his play over the final
42 regular-season games and into the Rockets□first-round playoff appearance
,□Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins said. □is ability to play both the
power forward and center position will complement our post play.□
While the Bobcats bet that the Rockets□luxury-tax issue will prevent them
from matching the offer sheet, Landry□ agent, Buddy Baker, said Landry
would be happy to return to the Rockets should they choose to match the offer
.
Knee said to be OK
Baker added that Landry□ knee is sound and that he will report to camp in
better shape than at the start of last season, when his quickness and leaping
ability earned him playing time ahead of the Rockets□anticipated schedule
.
□e feels great about the Bobcats□situation and is excited about it but
has no ill feelings at all with the Rockets,□Baker said. □arl understands
the process. Charlotte has a great young team and a Hall of Fame coach (
Larry Brown). But he feels like Houston is a championship-caliber team.
□f the Rockets choose to match it, he would be equally confident and excited
about playing for the Rockets. If they don□ match it, he will go to a great
situation to play for an incredible coach and with an emerging team.
□he business part that he can control is over. We□l see how it plays out
.□
