Report: Red Sox Scouting Bobby Abreu

In their search to add left-handed hitting to a righty-heavy lineup, the Red
Sox are looking at Bobby Abreu as a possible solution. According to Rafael
Tejera on Twitter, a scout from the Red Sox was in Venezuela on Saturday and
asked Abreu to take grounders at first base as part of his evaluation. The
extent of the team’s interest is not known to be serious, but Abreu could be
a fit for the Red Sox regardless of what happens with the Mike Napoli
situation.
Napoli
Abreu, 38, has played for five teams over his 17-year major league career,
including the Astros (1996-1997), Phillies (1998-2006), Yankees (2006-2008),
Angels (2009-2012), and Dodgers (2012). He is a career .292 hitter with 287
HR and 1349 RBI. In 2012, Abreu played in 100 games total, splitting time
between the Angels and Dodgers. He hit .242 with 3 HR and 24 RBI, and his
production has been steadily declining over the past two seasons.
Astros (1996-1997), Phillies (1998-2006),
Yankees (2006-2008), Angels (2009-2012), and Dodgers (2012),
If the Red Sox sign Abreu, it will likely be on a minor league deal or a
low-cost one-year major league deal. He provides some versatility, as he can
play in the outfield in addition to being a possible left-handed complement
at first base.
