Red Sox, Coyle Agree On $1.3 Million
Posted Aug. 16, 2010 3:34 pm by Jim Callis
The Red Sox have agreed to terms with third-round pick Sean Coyle for $1.3
million. That's more than $1 million above MLB's recommended bonus of
$279,900 for the No. 110 slot, and could be the first over several
seven-figure deals for Boston today. The Red Sox also are trying to close
deals with sandwich-rounder Anthony Ranaudo, second-rounder Brandon Workman
and fourth-rounder Garin Cecchini.
A shortstop from Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, Pa., Coyle is a
5-foot-8, 175-pounder who plays bigger than his size and projects as a second
baseman in the mold of Brian Roberts. He has plus speed and good instincts on
the bases, as well as surprising power and a competitive makeup. He had
committed to North Carolina, where his brother Tommy is the starting second
baseman.

Red Sox come to terms with Workman, Coyle
By Alex Speier
According to sources familiar with the situation, the Red Sox have come to
terms with both second-round selection Brandon Workman, and Sean Coyle, their
third-round pick.
Workman, a right-handed pitcher out of the University of Texas (the draft’s
57th round overall pick), will sign a deal that includes an $800,000 signing
bonus. The agreement was finalized after a call between the Red Sox and
Workman’s represenatives on a 2 p.m. call, with the player coming down from
his asking price of $1.25 million and the Sox coming up from the MLB’s
suggested slot of approximately $634,000. He will begin his professional
career in the coming days, reporting to Fort Myers.
Coyle the 110th overall selection in this year’s amateur draft, is
reportedly agreeing to a signing bonus of $1.3 million, according to Baseball
America’s Jim Callis. The Pennsylvania high school star flew into Boston
with his father for a physical, and to see if the final detalis of a contract
could be arranged. The finalized terms were well above MLB’s recommended
slot of $300,000.

Cecchini Brings Winning Attitude
Posted Aug. 16, 2010 6:00 pm by Nathan Rode
Every player that goes through the draft process has a whirlwind year leading
up to the June event. Garin Cecchini is no exception.
On the summer circuit he established himself as one of the best hitters in
the class and helped the Team USA 18U squad to a gold medal in the Pan Am
championship. He led the team in doubles (6) while hitting .333/.529/.708 in
24 at-bats.
He eyed another state title with Louisiana powerhouse Barbe High—coached by
his father Glenn—as spring approached, but things quickly changed. In
mid-March he tore his ACL in his right knee when trying to get back to first
base on a pickoff attempt. The injury knocked him out for the season after
just 15 games.
In those 15 games he hit .545/.737/.939 in 33 at-bats with two home runs, 14
RBIs, 24 runs and 23 stolen bases. He also struck out only three times while
walking 19. Cecchini holds the Barbe career record for stolen bases (144) and
finished in the top five in 11 other categories including runs (180), hits
(174) and batting average (.427).
"Coaching my sons has been a pleasure and Garin has been such a leader for
our team," Glenn Cecchini said. "Even after his injury, his character and
work ethic was a source of inspiration for all of us."
Cecchini was a first-round prospect before the injury, but he fell to the Red
Sox in the fourth. He signed about six hours before the August 16 deadline
for $1.31 million, the equivalent of first-round money.
“I love to compete for championships," Cecchini said. "In high school, I’ve
been lucky to play for a team that considers a championship the standard. I
loved helping Team USA bring home the gold last summer and I picked my
college (LSU) based upon the opportunity to win in Omaha. I am so excited to
join an organization that has the same goals and same commitment to winning.
The fact that an team with the Red Sox tradition believed in me after the
knee surgery made the biggest difference.”
Cecchini rehabbed his knee and got back to working out ahead of schedule.
While his younger brother Gavin—a 2012 infield prospect—participated in the
Tournament of Stars, the older Cecchini was in attendance to cheer him on as
well as have his mom pitch him some batting practice in the cages between
games.
"I am very happy for him because I know how hard he has worked to get back,"
Cecchini's mother Raissa said. "He’s so driven and just loves to play the
game. The fact that he now gets to play it for the Red Sox is kind of hard to
believe. It’s exciting and very humbling at the same time.”
Cecchini will participate in an upcoming Jimmy Fund telethon in which he will
match donations of up to $20,000.
