Youkilis: ‘I’ll be ready to go tomorrow’
July 6th, 2010

Youkilis, who left tonight’s game with what the Red Sox described as “right
ankle pain,” said he felt like he had a cramp in his ankle while he was
playing first base in the bottom of the third inning. When he came to the
plate to open the top of the fourth, his ankle “locked up.” He went to the
ground, and after being checked by assistant athletic trainer Greg Barajas,
he had trouble putting weight on his right leg. He left the game, replaced by
Niuman Romero, and well, you saw what happened. The Rays intentionally walked
David Ortiz three times, Romero went 0-for-4, including the game-ending
groundout with the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on first, and the
Red Sox lost their third straight game for the first time since May 15-17.
(More on all that later.)
After the game, Youkilis explained the strange situation and said he expects
to be ready to play in the series finale Wednesday night.
Here’s Youkilis, in his words:
“I wish I could tell you what happened. Basically, I was out in the field
and it felt like I had a cramp in my ankle, which is the most strange thing
ever. But basically what they said is you have a capsule, and somehow I
irritated it, and my whole entire ankle locked up. Just basically treated it,
and about half an hour ago I started to get a little movement. I’ll be ready
to go tomorrow. Just a freak little thing. It could be maybe from the turf
and all that. It’s just very odd. … The whole time in the field, I was just
hoping it would loosen up and it never did. It just locked up. It’s a weird
thing. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again. I don’t know. It’s just very
strange. … It’s getting better. It’s definitely loosening up. Icing and
all that. By tomorrow, it should be feeling pretty good and ready to rock.”
Asked about the ridiculous run of injuries that have befallen the Red Sox,
Youkilis said, “Well, I think mine was hopefully just a daily thing and you’
ve just got to move on. When you’re playing baseball 162 games in 187 days,
there’s going to be little things that happen. I don’t know how Cal Ripken
did it. It’s amazing. But you go on this turf sometimes, you get little
things that happen that are a little funky. Your body doesn’t always feel
good. We’ll be all right. We’ll weather the storm. It can’t get any worse,
so it can only get better.”
