Second baseman's left wrist OK, will likely start Friday

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Dustin Pedroia had Wednesday morning X-rays on his
sprained left wrist and the results were just what the Red Sox had hoped --
the star second baseman is fine.
"He's good," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "The X-ray is fine, which
we kind of thought, but [we did it] just to be careful."
The surest sign that Pedroia was as good as the X-rays said was that he was
already lobbying Francona to be back in the lineup for Thursday's home game
against the Marlins.
"I think what we'll do is let him take BP tomorrow and play him [Friday],"
Francona said. "He's OK. There's no swelling. Actually he's a little bit sore
higher, which is real good. He got a clean bill of health."
The injury was sustained Tuesday night, when Pedroia dove awkwardly for a
ground ball by Twins leadoff man Denard Span in the bottom of the first
inning. Pedroia made a throwing error on the play.
Naturally, the Red Sox held their breath just a bit right after the play
happened.
"Every time you see him dive -- we've seen him come up a number of times on
that shoulder," Francona said. "But you know what? There's nothing you can
do. You've got to play the game. I don't know how else to get around it. It
was a great play. You've just got to play the game. Again, I don't think
anybody thought there was something there, but it's nice to hear that."
Pedroia was the American League's Most Valuable Player Award winner in 2008.
Last year, he hit .296 with 115 runs, 48 doubles, 15 homers, 72 RBIs and 20
stolen bases.
Pedroia went 0-for-1 on Tuesday. For the spring, he is hitting .351
(13-for-37) with one homer and eight RBIs.
The Red Sox took on the Pirates on Wednesday, a game Pedroia wasn't scheduled
to play anyway because he is filming a commercial. Tug Hulett started at
second base for Boston.
