Michael Bowden- RHP- Boston- 6’3” 215 pounds- D.O.B. 9/9/86
Placement Overview: Bowden spent the majority of the 2008 season enjoying
tremendous success with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. In 19 starts, Bowden
went 9-4 with a miniscule 2.33 ERA, and added 101 strikeouts while walking
only 24 in 104.1 innings of work, which earned him a promotion to Triple-A
Pawtucket. Late in the season, Bowden was called up to the big leagues and
made his debut for Boston. In that debut, Bowden showed flashes of excellence
as he gave up just two earned runs on seven hits while striking out three on
his way to his first career win. Look for Bowden to start the 2009 season
either in the majors with the Red Sox, or in AAA Pawtucket to gain a little
more experience at a higher level before going back to the show.
Scout: Bowden’s fastball usually clocks in the 88-93 range with him topping
out at about 95 MPH without a lot of movement, making it an average pitch. He
has very good control and usually keeps the ball low in the zone. His
curveball is an above average pitch with plus potential as it is a
sharp-breaker with 12-6 rotation. Sometimes he tips off his curve by slightly
altering his delivery when he throws it. This should be fairly easy for him
to fix before the 2009 season. His changeup is above average and clocks in in
the low 80s, which gives him enough of a difference from his fastball to be
effective. These two solid secondary pitches in his repertoire are what will
make Bowden successful since the velocity on his fastball is nothing
spectacular. His delivery is fairly standard, although when he loads up to
throw the ball, he bends his wrist back, and then whips it down on the pitch.
Everything is fairly straight forward, and based on his delivery, he should
not have trouble with arm problems. One thing that seems to make Bowden
dangerous is that he so far in his career has been a fly ball pitcher. He has
kept his homerun numbers low thus far, but against better hitters in the
major leagues, this could potentially cause him some problems. He is a great
athlete overall, and has a tremendous work ethic. This is the type of guy who
wants the ball for the big games. He is a true competitor and simply loves to
pitch.
Projection: Bowden has the potential to be a #2 or #3 starter, but as a
member of the Boston Red Sox and their tremendous pitching staff, he may end
up being on the latter half of the rotation.
Grade: B+
Bottom Line: The guy has good stuff, and he throws strikes. The combination
of this and his work ethic and competitive nature should allow him to have a
lot of success in the big leagues, especially with a team as good as the Red
Sox.
Card Investing Analysis: Bowden has a base card in 2005 Bowman Chrome Draft
and an autograph in 2005 Bowman Sterling. He also has a SOTF auto from a 2006
Bowman product. His chrome base cards are currently selling between $1-$2,
with refractors around $12 apiece. His Bowman Sterling auto/jersey card has
been selling around $23.
