Luckily, Manny's sudden departure helped fuel Rays' surge

The rise of the Tampa Bay Rays from the rubble of a 1-8 start has widely been
interpreted as the latest proof this franchise is run by some of the sharpest
people in baseball.
光芒最近從開季1勝8敗的谷底爬出來後，已經被大家公認這球隊是由球界裡最菁英一群
人所經營。
And why not?
It was generally conceded that this season would be a struggle at best after
all those player losses over the winter. Yet, here they are -- just six
percentage points behind the New York Yankees for first place in the American
League East and gaining respect every day.
They are fourth in the latest power rankings from ESPN.com -- they were 26th
in the initial ranking, which coincided with the 1-8 start and the departure
of Manny Ramirez. That brings up an odd but undeniably true point. The Rays
clearly got it wrong on Ramirez, but this is one time where it was better to
be lucky than smart.
為何光芒沒有持續低迷？
一般認為，主力跑光之後的光芒，本季最多撐的不難看就很好了。然而，他們現
在，勝率在美聯東區僅落後第一名的洋基6%，而且越來越多人尊敬他們。

While it was seen as catastrophic by many when Ramirez abruptly "retired"
rather than face a 100-game suspension for violation of baseball's policy on
performance enhancing drugs, losing Man-Ram was just what the Rays needed.
If Ramirez was still here, Sam Fuld never would have gotten a chance to play
every day. While Super Sam has cooled at the plate since his other-worldly
start, he still provides multiple intangibles and more than adequate defense
in left field.
Without Fuld, Johnny Damon would have been spending more time in the field
instead of at Ramirez's designated hitter spot. Not only has Damon provided
more offense at DH than Man-Ram likely would have, it also has spared his
tender calf muscles from the artificial turf at Tropicana Field.
Remember how Damon needed a break after just two games at the Trop because of
calf soreness? That's not a problem now. He also has had a completely
professional, positive attitude about moving to what essentially is the
full-time DH role. That's never a bad thing.

When Ramirez left, the Rays promoted Casey Kotchman to fill the roster spot.
He had gone to Durham after Dan Johnson secured the first base job in the
spring. So what happens? After Johnson has struggled to hit, Kotchman made
the most of his chance to play. He has has taken over at first and the Rays
are significantly better for it.
In fact, he has almost been too good.
After hitting .217 with Seattle last season, including a horror show on-base
percentage of .280, Kotchman is raking at .355 with an OBP of .437 right now
for the Rays. That kind of production almost certainly can't last (his career
numbers are .261/.329), so some sort of statistical correction is in order.
But ride the wave while you can. Local native Kotchman has been just what the
Rays needed, and his defense at first has been every bit the equal of the
dearly departed Carlos Pena. We know the value the Rays place on defense, so
even if Kotchman begins to struggle with the bat he still figures to be an
important piece of this team going forward.

It's only fair to mention that the Rays also have gotten healthy by catching
some teams at the right time.
They fattened up on the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox, winning nine
of 11 against two scuffling teams. They swept a suddenly slumping Baltimore
over the weekend. That's what good teams are supposed to do, though, and they
did much of this work while Evan Longoria was out for a month with that
oblique strain and other parts of the lineup were in transition.
It has also helped that no one in the American League East ran off to the
kind of start like the Rays had in 2010.
The Yankees have sputtered a bit and we know about the struggles of the
Boston Red Sox, although it's probably best not to look at them in the
rear-view mirror at the moment.
They have won three in a row to pull within a game of .500 and into third
place in the division, and Carl Crawford (remember him?) is coming on like we
knew he would. He hit .370 last week.
比較公平的說法是，光芒也是因為球員健康所以才在對的時機電某些球隊。
光芒戰績被雙城跟白襪養的肥肥壯壯的，它不只從這兩支慘烈的球隊，11場中拿了9勝。
上週末還橫掃了突然鳥掉的金鶯。但這也是好球隊應該幹的好事。之前Evan Longoria
因為腹部拉傷，離開這支球隊一個多月，這段時間，光芒變動了部分先發陣容，也收到
很好的效果。

在後照鏡中完全看不到他們的影子。但紅襪最近在系列賽贏了三場，把勝率拉上五成，

The Rays have rejoined the party though, which is a pretty good feat
considering all the change they've gone through -- although none of this is
to say they are a finished product.
Not at all.
Matt Joyce, for instance, has caught a nice wave in recent games and everyone
will want to see if he can sustain that. Reid Brignac's struggles at the
plate are getting worrisome. Kyle Farnsworth has been dandy as a closer, as
has the rest of the bullpen. And the starting pitching -- particularly James
Shields -- has basically kept the ship afloat.
雖然沒人敢說這些球員已經是完成品，如果你知道光芒所經歷的變動，光芒能重回領頭
集團根本是不可思議的壯舉。
也不全然如此！
舉個例，Matt Joyce在最近這些比賽是有些高潮，但每個人等著看他是否能維持高潮，

But this team began to turn around shortly after Man-Ram left.
No one is saying the people who run the Rays aren't smart. After all, they
had the pieces in place (Fuld, Kotchman, et al) to deal with things after the
roster shakeup. But everyone needs a little luck, too.
So consider this:
The Rays were 0-6 the day the news broke about Ramirez. Since then, they are
20-8.
Coincidence?
Not to me.
但是這支球隊在Man-Ram走了後的確開始變身。沒人敢說光芒經營者不聰明，畢竟他們在
這有不少功勞( Fuld，Kotchman，....等等)，在人事地震後還能交易到這些好貨，但每
個人也需要點好運。
細想一下這個：
光芒0勝6敗那天，新聞爆了Ramirez退休的事，自此之後，他們20勝8敗。
巧合？
對我來說不像。
