Rangers prospect Joe Wieland throws no-no

Rangers Double-A Frisco pitcher Joe Wieland tossed a no-hitter Friday night
in a 3-0 win in San Antonio against the Missions. Wieland, 21, faced the
minimum, allowing just a lone walk (which was later erased on a steal
attempt). Click here for the box score.
It was the fourth no-hitter in RoughRiders history, but the first by one
pitcher in a nine-inning game. Martin Perez posted a rain-shortened perfect
game April 19 at Arkansas.
The right-handed Wieland threw a season-high 109 pitches and struck out
seven.
I was told by a few folks that were in attendance that Wieland's fastball
command was the best it's been all year, hitting both sides of the plate with
good movement. His curve was also an important pitch, keeping hitters
off-balance.
The scouting report on Wieland this year is that he has pretty consistent
command, throws between 88-93 mph and has a good curve. He's learning to
throw his change better too. Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus said the
velocity has been consistently in the 90s, a few ticks higher than last year.
Wieland is one of those trade chips we've heard about the past few weeks. I'm
sure there were some scouts watching that no-hitter. It may make Wieland more
valuable to the Rangers too.
