ARLINGTON -- Speed is easy to measure in the Olympics. Whether it's Usain
Bolt, Carl Lewis, Valeri Borzov or Harold Abrahams, you line up eight guys
behind a starting line, shoot off a gun, have them run 100 meters and simply
crown the winner as the World's Fastest Human Being.

Speed in baseball is a little more difficult to measure, especially when it
comes to team speed. Stolen bases are one measure, and the Rangers, through
Tuesday, are fifth in the American League in that category with 107. This is
their second straight year with over 100 steals after doing it once (111 in
1999) in the previous 15 seasons.

West.

In other words, the Rangers can run and love to run. They are determined to
be aggressive. There's no doubt there are times they are too aggressive,
leaving fans wondering just what they are thinking. The Rangers are fifth in
stolen bases, but they are ninth in stolen-base percentage.

Sometimes the manager wonders what they were thinking, especially on a
Saturday afternoon in Minnesota. Julio Borbon, with the Rangers down 9-3 in
the sixth, was on second with nobody out when Cruz hit a grounder to third
baseman Matt Tolbert. Borbon broke for third and was tagged out easily.

But, for the most part, the manager encourages the Rangers to be as
aggressive as possible with their speed.

to be, a team that takes it to you. When you have guys in the lineup that can

The Rangers, through Tuesday, had five players in double figures in stolen
bases and five in double figures in home runs. They haven't had as many as
five players with at least 10 steals on a team since 1987. Between 2000-08,
they had 70 players with at least 10 home runs in a season and just 19
players who had at least 10 steals.

The Rangers used their speed to break open Tuesday's 11-4 victory over the
Tigers. They were up, 7-4, in the seventh when Matt Treanor led off with a
single. Borbon and Elvis Andrus then dropped a pair of bunts and beat them
both out for a pair of singles that loaded the bases. Young followed with a
three-run double to right.

third, scoring from second, beating out double plays -- that's nice speed.

Washington has always preached pitching and defense. He talks about both over
and over. But the third part of the fundamental trinity is running the bases
well, and that was one of the reasons he hired Gary Pettis as his first-base
coach. Pettis spends long hours in Spring Training teaching all aspects of
running the bases, beyond just swiping a bag when needed.

"The one thing that Gary impresses upon them is you don't have to be a rabbit
to be a good runner," Washington said. "Look for what they're giving you and
pay attention to the signs out there. Early on we made mistakes that are

The Rangers did it again Wednesday. They were down, 2-1, when Cruz doubled
with nobody out in the second. Ian Kinsler then dropped a bunt down the
first-base line. Catcher Alex Avila got to the ball but had to rush his throw
to first to get Kinsler and threw past first baseman Miguel Cabrera. Cruz
ended up scoring.

One inning later, speed and aggressive baserunning paid off again. Andrus hit
a ground ball up the middle that shortstop Jhonny Peralta fielded deep to the
left of second base. But his throw to first was too late to get the speedy
Andrus.

That was just the start. Young lined a hard single to center, and Andrus
didn't hesitate. He challenged center fielder Austin Jackson and headed for
third. Jackson threw that way and had no chance. All he did was allow Young
to race to second base. Suddenly the Rangers had runners at second and third,
and both runners ended up scoring on infield grounders.

"We're able to erase mistakes, and we're able to make mistakes and get away
with it because of our speed," Kinsler said. "We're able to take an extra
base at any point in the game."

Want a measure of speed? The Rangers, by putting pressure on the opposition,
had scored 65 unearned runs through Tuesday, second most in the AL.

The Rangers have never been known for speed. But add aggressiveness to it,
and it's a significant part of why they are in first place in the American
League West.
