http://0rz.tw/973xw Let's see how I can wriggle out of this one. I, um, used an extemperaneous word yesterday when I said that Max Ramirez was the first of three "consecutive" catchers on our list. He was the first of three, but, alas, they are not consecutive. So, yesterday's tease was actually bad info. But let's start the top 10: No. 10 RHP Omar Poveda (Age: 20) 2007 season: 12-6, 3.22 ERA, 153 strikeouts and 45 walks in 153 2/3 innings at Class A Clinton and Bakersfield. The scoop: Poveda was listed at 6-4, 200 pounds last year, but it’s likely his weight will increase slightly as he matures and his training regimen intensifies. I love how he is progressing. He went to Clinton as an 18-year-old in 2006 and didn’t ever get overwhelmed despite pitching on a bad team (he was 4-13 with a 4.88 ERA). He went back to Clinton last year and went 11-4 in 21 starts to earn a promotion to high A. He learned a league one year, then dominated it the next while still being a teenager. That is a good trend to set for the future. The Rangers think his repertoire and feel might be the most complete of any of their pitching prospects. Others throw harder than Poveda, who is 90-93 mph with the fastball, but his secondary pitches (a change and a curve) are both considered above average. That is backed up by the fact he’s averaged 2.48 walks per nine innings and 8.57 strikeouts for his pro career. You rarely see guys average a strikeout per inning and still have better than a 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. That is advanced command. Also worth noting is that this kid has pitched more than 150 innings in each of the last two seasons. That’s an indicator he could be an innings-eater in the majors. Granted, it’s all been at the lower levels, but there are a lot of signs that suggest Poveda could be a durable power pitcher. And when’s the last time the Rangers had one of those?
