San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum and Florida Marlins pitching
prospect Brett Sinkbeil aren’t exactly on the same level in terms of talent,
but the only thing we are comparing today is what they do at their “balance
point”.
When a pitcher hits their balance point, they basically stop mid-way through
their wind-up to establish balance and then start again as they head toward
home plate. This is called a “tall-and-fall” pitcher.
When a pitcher "drifts through the balance point”, there is no stoppage in
the wind-up. As the pitcher lifts his knee during his wind-up, you see him
start to drift toward home plate before ever reaching his balance point.
Momentum carries the pitcher toward home plate as he leads with his hips.
For a better illustration, on the left is Tim Lincecum (drifting through the
balance point) and on the right is Brett Sinkbeil (tall-and-fall):
A pitcher's "balance point" has a lot to do with a pitcher's tempo. Tempo is
defined as "the speed in which a pitcher can go from the point to where their
knee reaches its upper most point (or when it starts to move downward) to the
time of release." Tempo is measured in frames. Lincecum comes in around 21
frames until release, while Sinkbeil comes in around 29 or 30 frames until
release. The benefits of drifting through the balance point and a faster
tempo are as follows:
1. Stride Length and Release Point - A pitcher that drifts through the
balance point and really gets out in front is more likely to release the ball
just a little bit closer to home plate. Drifting enables a pitcher to have a
longer stride. Even just a couple inches can make a big difference.
Releasing the ball a little closer to home plate allows the ball to get on
the hitters faster. The faster the ball gets on a player, the better.
2. Velocity - Drifting through the balance point allows a pitcher to build up
momentum toward home plate. The pitcher's tempo is increased, their arm is
almost forced to become faster and this all adds up to the potential for
extra velocity to be added. Now, it should be noted that despite an
extremely slow tempo, Sinkbeil does manage to generate pretty solid velocity
due to a pretty short arm action among other things.
3. Deception - As mentioned earlier, the body is moving faster toward home
plate. If a pitcher has a wind-up that looks aggressive and looks as if they
are they are about to throw something hard, then as a hitter, you gear up for
something fast; until the pitcher throws you a breaking pitch. As a result,
the hitter is off balance at the plate.
Of course, there are some downsides to drifting through the balance point.
For one, not all people are able to do it. Drifting requires some sort of
athleticism and keeping all parts coordinated together, so repeating your
delivery can be a difficult thing.
Control can sometimes become an issue if the body is moving to fast for the
arm to catch up or the pitcher is not consistently able to repeat their
delivery.
However, the positives heavily outweigh the negatives in my opinion. Even if
a pitcher has trouble drifting through the balance point, they can still do a
better job leading with their hips instead of being so “tall-and-fall”.
