Pistons will pick seventh, Wizards first in NBA draft

Auburn Hills -- The Pistons were slotted to pick seventh in this year's NBA
draft -- and that's exactly where they'll be picking.
Form held in the draft lottery Tuesday -- at least for the Pistons -- and now
speculation will center on whom the team will target, or whether they'll
package the pick in a trade.
Joe Dumars, president of basketball operations, will keep his options open,
although he likes where the Pistons stand.
"The phones start ringing now because you know the (drafting) position,"
Dumars said. "We'll take phone calls and make phone calls and see what
happens.
"We think it's a deep enough draft we can get somebody who can come in and
help us right away."
That somebody will likely be a player with size, said Dumars, who added this
draft is stocked with talented big men.
"To balance our roster out, we have to make sure we add young bigs to our
team," Dumars said. "At first glance that's what we'd look at. The other
thing I'd say to that is, we won't just draft a big for the sake of drafting
a big."
Scott Perry, vice president of basketball operations, represented the Pistons
on the dais during the lottery.
Dumars and the rest of his staff are heading to Chicago for a two-day draft
camp which begins Thursday.
After that, the Pistons, who also pick in the second round (36th overall),
will bring in potential draft picks for individual workouts.
The Nets, who had the league's worst record, were projected to draft first
overall but fell to third. The Wizards will pick first, followed by the 76ers.
The order of all teams in the lottery:
1. Washington
2. Philadelphia
3. New Jersey
4. Minnesota
5. Sacramento
6. Golden State
7. Detroit
8. L.A. Clippers
9. Utah
10. Indiana
11. New Orleans
12. Memphis
13. Toronto
14. Houston
Davis looks like good bet for Detroit
With the seventh pick in June's draft, the Pistons have plenty of options.
They are set at small forward and shooting guard, with a glaring deficiency
inside.
Assuming they don't trade the pick, it's likely they'll go for a big man.
Georgia Tech forward Derrick Favors has arguably the most potential and
Kentucky center DeMarcus Cousins is probably the most NBA-ready post player.
Neither is expected to slip too far from the top five.
That leaves Ekpe Udoh (Baylor), Ed Davis (North Carolina), Cole Aldrich
(Kansas), and Greg Monroe (Georgetown). They'll need scoring and athleticism
inside, so they'll take Davis.
