He was originally asked to paint twelve fi gures, but he turned down the job because he saw himself more as a sculptor th an a painter. However, when he was given free rein to paint what he wanted, he agreed, and despite the uncomfortable circumstances he wound up creating 300 figures and more than 5000 square feet of frescoes.
