Williams finds immediate role with Hornets

On one young NBA team, veteran Aaron Williams had been left to sit the bench
and deemed almost useless. But less than five minutes into his first game with
the New Orleans Hornets, Williams was on the floor proving his worth.

With David West picking up two early fouls, Williams entered the Hornets' game
against Chicago on Wednesday night at the 7:06 mark of the first quarter. He
scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds in 21 minutes, his most
significant playing time of the season.

Williams, a 6-foot-9 forward, played in six of Toronto's first seven games,

Raptors sent him to New Orleans for two second-round draft picks.

Williams had averaged only 1.8 points and 1.1 rebounds while playing 7.1
minutes per game for Toronto. He quadrupled his output and tripled his playing
time in his first game with the Hornets.

Williams said he was glad to be back in coach Byron Scott's offensive system.
He played for Scott for more than three seasons in New Jersey, including trips
to the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003. He averaged a career-high 10.2 points and
7.2 rebounds on Scott's 2000-01 Nets team.

Williams helps fill a role vacated by Chris Andersen, who was dismissed last
week for violating the NBA's drug policy. New Orleans also acquired 7-foot
center Steven Hunter from Philadelphia. Hunter is expected to arrive on
Friday.

Williams said he was impressed by New Orleans' young talent. From afar, he

After Wednesday's win, the Hornets are above .500 for the first time since
Dec. 2. At 23-22, New Orleans is 1 1/2 games ahead of Utah and Minnesota for
eighth place in the Western Conference.

"Some of the guys' athletic ability is just out of this world — guys who can
shoot, guys who can score down low," Williams said. "I think the sky's the
limit for this team."
