Mailbag: Who could break out in 2007?
Who are the top rookie prospects that could break into the starting lineup for
the 2007 season? Is there a Josh Barfield for the offense or a Cla Meredith for
the bullpen?

那個菜鳥明年有辦法擠進先發陣容裡?有沒有進攻的Josh還是牛棚的Cla Meredith?
Ben Johnson comes to mind, once again, as a player who could make an impact in
the outfield. Perhaps a new manager with a clean slate will work to Johnson's
advantage. It's happened before, and the man from Memphis certainly has the
tools to be an exciting everyday performer similar to his good buddy, Barfield.
Ben Johnson要好好留意，又一次，有一個球員在外野有影響(這句應該是指因為明年
外野有點缺，Dave會走，Giles老了)，或許新的教練要思考一下Johnson的優點了，在這

Terrmel Sledge isn't a rookie, but he's another guy to keep in mind. A
succession of injuries hobbled him in '06, but by next spring he finally should
be healthy. That torn hamstring he suffered in 2005 was a major injury -- you
wouldn't want to hear Sledge describe it in detail. I think this guy can play.
As with so many players, it's a matter of opportunity.

As for the bullpen, nobody saw Meredith coming -- nobody. GM Kevin Towers has
a history of finding hidden gems, so there's always a chance we'll see another
quality reliever emerge. But I doubt we'll ever see anything quite like
Meredith, an unknown who was traded to the Padres along with Josh Bard in
exchange for Doug Mirabelli back in May from the Red Sox and simply shut down
the National League for two months like nothing I'd ever seen.
說到牛棚，沒有人會期待Meredith -- 沒有人會，Towers他有沙礫中找到珍珠的能力，所
以我們將來會有機會看到其他很好的救援投手上來，但我懷疑我們究竟能看到跟Meredith

I keep hearing about Moneyball. What does that mean?

Moneyball describes a philosophy based on an examination of statistical data,
and it drives the operations of an increasing number of franchises. The Padres
have a CEO in Sandy Alderson and a vice president of scouting and development,
Grady Fuson, who were at the forefront of the moneyball movement in Oakland,
although they would tell you they are not confined by any such labels in trying
to build a successful franchise.
錢球描述的是一些統計數據上面的觀點，且利用這數據來讓隊上排名上升，Padres的CEO
Aldeson跟負責球探的Fuson，這兩位之前是在OAK錢球運作的重要人物，雖然他們會跟你說
他們沒有用任何標記來打造一個成功的球隊過。
Not to get too technical here, but essentially moneyball attaches high value to
on-base percentage and slugging percentage, stressing the importance of working
counts and drawing walks along with the big-bang theory of the long ball having
more significance than stealing bases and playing a brand of ball traditionally
associated with the National League.
並沒有太多技巧在這，但是本質上錢球給上壘率跟長打率很高的評價，這爆炸性的理論中
強調working counts(工作時數?)跟保送重要性比盜壘有更深的含義且扮演球的風格在NL
傳統球風裡。
Another element is embracing performance in a prospect over potential. What
this means is if you have a choice between a college player who has performed
at a high level in a good conference or a high school player with loads of
physical talent who hasn't faced a high level of competition, you would tend
to go for the college player.
其他的包括像新秀特性是超過天賦，這是說如果你有一個選擇在大學球員他在高水準表現
好或是高中球員有著滿身的天賦但沒打過高水準的競爭，你應該要注意這大學球員。

What are the chances of Gary Sheffield coming back to San Diego in a trade?

Hard to say. We keep hearing that the Yankees will deal him, but he'll be
making $13 million in 2007, and that would consume almost half of the money
the Padres have available to new players.

If New York gets the player or players it wants in return -- presumably
pitching, based on the Yankees' needs -- owner George Steinbrenner probably
would pick up at least part of Sheffield's contract. The Boss has been known

Would Sheffield be a fit in San Diego? Absolutely. He's a dead-pull hitter who
wouldn't be bothered by the left-center and right-center gaps nearly as much as
most hitters. There are few hitters in the game as dangerous as Sheffield. He
has a strong enough arm to play right field as well as left, and he even is
capable of filling in at the corner infield spots.

He's a controversial figure, yes, but Sheffield was happy in San Diego the

How is Shawn Estes' recovery coming along, and what are the chances he is back
in San Diego?

Estes was optimistic after his reconstructive elbow surgery that he would come
back strong sometime during the 2007 season and be as good as ever at 34 years
old.
他對他手肘手術過後相當的樂觀且會健健康康的回來，第34個年頭會越來越好。
A free agent, Estes is an interesting case. He had established himself as the
Padres' No. 2 starter with a strong spring, and if they believe he's capable
of coming back and being that kind of performer around midseason 2007, it would
be worth investing in him. Quality lefties are hard to find, and Estes not only
is talented, he's highly respected and well liked by teammates.

What has happened to Matt Bush? I know he had an injury last season, but he
seems to have fallen off the radar screen.

Bush played only 22 games before shutting it down with leg injuries. The Padres
haven't quit on the former No. 1 overall draft pick, but he needs to have an
injury-free season to establish himself as a potential Major League player.
He'll be 21 this season, and he has intriguing tools at shortstop, but he needs
to play to grow.
Bush只打了22場比賽因為腳傷就收工了，教士並沒有放棄這位農場第一評價的新秀，但是
他要在受傷的期間去評估他自己是否能上大聯盟，今年他21歲，他在ss表現很棒，但他
需要比賽來成長。
