[賽訪9/25]Padres get lift from 'pen to beat Cards
ST. LOUIS -- Once again, the story was focused on the Padres' bullpen -- only
this time, Trevor Hoffman had no role in the script.

Jon Adkins, Scott Cassidy, Alan Embree, Cla Meredith and Scott Linebrink were
the leading men in Monday night's 6-5 decision over the Cardinals at Busch
Stadium, pushing San Diego's lead to two games over idle Los Angeles in the
National League West.

Brian Giles was the offensive catalyst with a three-run double and another

With David Wells scratched because of a bout of gout in his right foot, Mike
Thompson took the mound, and he departed with one out in the fourth inning

Seventeen outs later, the Padres had taken their fourth in a row -- without
having to lean on their main man, Hoffman. Striking out the side in the sixth,
Cassidy (6-4) got the win as Linebrink closed this show with his second save
of the season.

Hoffman, having worked in six of the previous eight games, was given the night
off after reaching his personal summit with career save No. 479 on Sunday in
the home finale at PETCO Park.

The king of saves was a cheerleader, pulling for good buddy Linebrink to come
through -- and come through he did.

Facing the heart of the Cards' order in the ninth after getting the final out
in the eighth, Linebrink struck out the side, pitching around Albert Pujols.
After giving Pujols four balls out of the strike zone, the potential tying run
was at second in the form of Aaron Miles, who'd singled leading off.

But Linebrink, using his full repertoire, dropped a killer split-fingered

"I kept half-thinking he [Hoffman] was going to warm up and get the last out,"
Linebrink said, grinning. "There was no safety net. It's different when you're
the last guy down in the 'pen. You get outs or you don't get outs.

As a group, starting with Adkins in relief of Thompson in the fourth, the five
Padres relievers surrendered three hits and two walks, striking out eight.

"Any [scoreless] inning we can put together is a good inning, whether it's the
first or ninth," Adkins said. "We're not going to give up; we're going to keep
fighting to the end. That's the biggest attribute to this team. We've got guys
who get dirty every day. It's great watching these guys go about their
business on a day to day basis."

his Padres heading down the stretch.

introduced himself to Pujols in the seventh with a strikeout on a 2-2 fastball
that exploded on the great hitter's fists.

"He's a great hitter -- he's Albert Pujols," Meredith said. "You can be blind

St. Louis' loss opened a 3 1/2-game gap between the Padres and Cards for

get there. Houston, which beat Philadelphia, advanced to within 2 1/2 games of
the Cardinals in the suddenly interesting NL Central.

After the Cards had scored first on Chris Duncan's 21st homer, the Padres broke
loose for five second-inning runs against Jeff Suppan, with Giles' three-run
double to center the big blow.

Geoff Blum and Josh Barfield also had RBI singles during a rally that started

Pujols' RBI single made it 5-2 in the third, but Thompson induced Rolen to hit
into a double play, and then the 6-foot-4 right-hander made a superb stab on

Dave Roberts tied his career high for a season with 45 stolen bases but was
thrown out at home trying to score by left fielder Duncan in the ninth on
Linebrink's single in his first at-bat of the season.

"How many closers are hitting 1.000?" a beaming Linebrink said.
