[農場]Jon Knott跟Jack Cust
"He's a super young man who has worked his way up the ladder, a very humble
person who is grateful to the Padres for giving him a chance," said Padres
field coordinator Bill Bryk.

Undrafted out of Mississippi State in 2001, Knott needed an opportunity to
show that he could hit professional pitching. The Padres, heeding the
recommendation of a minor league coach, Tom Brown, who lived near Knott,
invited the right-handed slugger to a tryout camp at their training complex
in Arizona.

The club didn't pay Knott, until he earned an assignment to its short-season
team in the Northwest League.

Now 28, Knott had 32 home runs and 113 RBI in 136 games for Triple-A Portland,
earning him a promotion on Friday.

One of Knott's Portland teammates, Jack Cust, also slugged his way to the
majors this year. Cust hit 30 home runs, and in his first at-bat for the
Padres, he hammered a first-pitch single.

盟第一個打數打第一球就是一支安打。
"I just want to contribute however I can," Cust said.

Late in the 2005 season, when he was with Oakland's Triple-A club, Cust saw his
power mysteriously vanish. His hands were bothering him, so much so that when
Cust drove his car, each hand went numb on the steering wheel.

As it turned out, Cust had carpal tunnel syndrome, a nerve ailment that is more
apt to afflict typists. Cust had surgery on both wrists last November, and he
regained his all-fields power. One of his drives in Portland cleared the
center-field batting eye and kept soaring.
之後發現Cust罹患了carpal tunnel症後群，是神經疾病一種，通常發生在打字員身上，在

"I'd say it went 550 feet," said teammate Paul McAnulty.

Like Knott, Cust isn't a natural defender at first base or in left field. But
the left-hander's 143 walks led all minor leaguers, fueling a gaudy .467
on-base percentage.
跟Knott一樣，Cust不是天生的防守好手，不管在一壘或是左外野。但是這左打者有143次
保送領先全小聯盟，有.467上壘率。
"I've always been patient at the plate," Cust said. "Really, it's about getting
a good pitch to hit."

Cust, 27, has admirers in the Japan leagues who could offer the Padres
significant money for him this offseason, but he also has backers in the San
Diego organization who wish to retain him for 2007.
