[外電] Suns should take a look at Lamar Odom
Phoenix Suns should take a look at Lamar Odom
Jerry Colangelo is willing to take a flier on Lamar Odom.
It makes us wonder whether the Suns ought to consider doing the same thing.
Odom was a member of the USA Basketball 2010 World Championship team that won
a gold medal in Turkey, and Colangelo told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that
he is under consideration for the USA squad that will compete this summer at
the London Olympics.
The upside makes sense.
Odom is a versatile 6-foot-10 forward, with the ability to create for others,
rebound, shoot, or post up in the paint.
He has a lot to prove.
And don't forget that he was the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year with the Lakers
in 2010-11.
Yes, there is risk, too.
Odom is 32 and has gone through a series of off-the-court personal issues,
including the death of a close cousin, an accident in which he was a
passenger in a car that hit and killed a cyclist, and the death in 2006 of
his son Jayden to sudden infant death syndrome.
Then he was part of a trade the Lakers made with New Orleans that was
blocked, followed by a trade to Dallas.
That turned out to be a disaster from the start and when it all came to a
head in a clash with owner Mark Cuban, Odom was inactivated for the remainder
of the season.
"I'm one who is willing to give someone a second chance," Colangelo said. "I
would like to think he'd like to put this season behind him.
"His Dallas episode hurt his image. If he comes in and shows he can be a
contributor, and his attitude is good and he wants to be here, why not? As
far as USA Basketball is concerned, he's in the pool, and we'll see how it
plays out."
He also is likely to be in a shallow pool of players available who could
actually improve the Suns.
The Mavericks must buyout his contract for $2.4 million by June 29
(coincidentally, the anniversary of Jayden's death), or pay him $8.2 million
for next season.
Clearly, the Mavericks will buy him out.
So, Odom likely will be available for a reasonable price, maybe even a
veteran minimum deal.
That reduces the risk significantly and makes the potential reward that much
better -- like Michael Redd this season.
Second, he fits the bill of a playmaker that guard Steve Nash has expressed a
desire to see the Suns add to their roster.
It is the reason that Nash hoped the Suns would make a strong bid for Boris
Diaw, who now is helping San Antonio chase another championship.
The Suns make sense for Odom, too.
First, he played for Alvin Gentry when both were with the Los Angeles
Clippers and had a couple of his best statistical seasons as a professional
under Gentry.
Second, he probably is only going to get one more good shot at his age, and
the Suns were that close to making the playoffs.
Finally, he would be in close proximity to Los Angeles, which is home to him.
Odom and his reality-TV wife Khloe Kardashian have announced that they're
pulling the plug on their spin-off show.
That's one less distraction.
Odom reportedly is working out in Los Angeles to prepare for an Olympic team
run and focus on being in great shape for next season.
This could be one of those rare occasions where a motivated player needs a
team as much as the team needs the player.
It's worth taking that flier.
簡短的翻一下(我好懶.....
文內大致上是說...
Odom
