The Suns will play basketball again in 2011 after all. The NBA owners and players reached a tentative agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement that will start a 66-game season on Christmas. So what does this mean immediately for the Suns? For a team that has not played since April 13, they have not lacked for meeting and preparation time for this. Here is some of the initial impact: A 66-game season starting Christmas would mean that the Suns open at home Dec. 28 against the Los Angeles Lakers if there are no alterations to the pre-existing schedule. But the feeling is that there will be an entirely new schedule. The Suns had 26 games that were supposed to take place before Christmas. Otherwise, Carter's $18 million salary would be fully guaranteed. In June, the Suns negotiated to delay the guaranteed-salary date on Carter's final contract year. Brooks' timing could not have have been worse. He reached an agreement Chinese Basketball Association team Guangdong last week. The CBA passed a rule this year to now allow for players to sign contracts with opt-out clauses that would allow them to leave in the case that the NBA settled. Brooks' team likely will be playing into March. He made his Guangdong debut Friday with four points in 15 minutes. Brooks, a restricted free agent when he returns to the NBA, could have been re-signed to be Steve Nash's backup or a piece in a sign-and-trade deal for the Suns. The Suns have affordable team options on Zabian Dowdell, Garret Siler and Gani Lawal but will be in the market for free agents too. Their targets could be a third point guard, a scoring wing and a big man. The issue will be that the Suns will not be over the salary cap, given their cap holds beyond the guaranteed contracts. The Suns also figure to spend prudently to keep their bigger plans for 2012 free agency in place. If an amnesty clause is part of the new deal and it has a window that is the length of the new CBA, the Suns are likely to hold onto it. If they had to use it immediately, Pietrus would be a candidate to take his $5.3 million off for salary cap space. Pietrus' health will be something for the Suns to learn after he was removed from the French national team this summer to have a minor knee surgery. The Suns might not be able to pursue amnesty players if they are over the cap.
