Fourteen floors high in downtown Phoenix's new CityScape high-rise, Robert
Sarver's office at Alliance Bank headquarters has a sweeping view toward the
city's southeast.
The view looks over his other business at US Airways Center, where the
vantage point for his Suns is not so elevated as in past years. But the Suns
managing partner's outlook remains bright despite experiencing his first
losing season since his group bought the Suns in 2004.
Sarver looks on the sunny side of the summer moves, feels like this 20-24
team has enough to make the playoffs and likes how the club is positioned for
what he openly calls a transition phase.
Sarver noted how this team is not drastically removed from last year's pace
(25-19) and has his "fingers crossed" for another turnaround. A year ago
Friday, the Suns began a 28-7 close to last season.
"I feel we have the talent to be a playoff team," Sarver said. "We just have
to bring it all together and get more consistency."
Sarver acknowledges that his team, known for a transition game for six years,
is in a transition but wants to remain competitive throughout it.
With a depth of quality teams in the West, that has been difficult for a team
that has only six players remaining from last season's conference finals
team. He said it has been no easier for him to watch than any fan or
employee. Despite the performance, he said attendance is even with last
season and television ratings are 18 percent higher.
"We've added a lot of new pieces to the team," Sarver said. "It takes time
for those new players to be integrated. Offensively, our team revolves around
Steve (Nash). He is a rhythm player. I think it takes times with new pieces
to get that rhythm."
Consistent with the front office stance, Sarver talks of Nash as a key part
moving forward despite speculation - and suggestion - that the team trade the
player they often call the face of the franchise. Nash turns 37 in 10 days.
"At this point, Steve is still playing at a very high level and is a very
important part of the franchise," Sarver said. "I don't see us making a trade
(involving) him this year. I just don't see it.

"The two main reasons for why I'd like to see Steve stay here is he's still
the best player and most important player on the team and, in addition, we've
got a lot history together. That means something."

3-way plan
Sarver said he also wants Grant Hill, 38, to finish his career with the Suns.
Sarver said an expanded analytics team determined there has been no drop-off
in Nash's and Hill's performance but he wants to keep Hill also to influence
young players.
Sarver said the team has various plans for the future, based on whether
collective bargaining agreement negotiations get done before next season,
delay next season or cancel next season and all the parameters a new CBA
might set.
He touts how the team is the only one besides Dallas, Denver and San Antonio
to have winning records for the past six seasons. The franchise has been
through 13 losing seasons and has remained the fourth winningest club by
percentage.
Sarver is optimistic about the future, given this season's moves to extend
Jared Dudley's contract, acquire Marcin Gortat and add a second first-round
pick to their June draft.
"We've given ourselves a lot more flexibility two years from now," said
Sarver, a member of the NBA's 10-owner labor committee. "One of the goals of
the new collective bargaining agreement is to create more parity in the
league. This will put us in pretty good position but it's going to be up to
us to execute."
STAT glance
The Suns' summer execution has been criticized for losing Amar'e Stoudemire,
trading for Hedo Turkoglu and adding multiyear deals for Channing Frye, Josh
Childress and Hakim Warrick.
Sarver considers Childress a future asset affected by Hill's level of play.
He said Warrick has delivered as expected based on his deal. He is happy with
Frye's $30 million contract, touting his effort. He said the club misread how
Turkoglu would fit but said trading him to get Gortat served the Suns well -
now and for the future.
Sarver said the Suns knew Stoudemire would not return but held out hope
during negotiations.
"Losing someone with the ability and talent of Amar'e was tough," Sarver
said. "I miss having him on the team. I do not regret at all not signing that
contract. At the end of the day, it wasn't a question of his ability or
skill. Any time you lose an All-Star player, that's a hole to fill and we did
the best we can to fill that hole, thinking in the short term and long term
with some mixed results, which is typically the case in this business.
"During discussions, he didn't want to take any of the risk and it boiled
down to money. There was a team out there that was willing to provide him
with a max contract without any protection and that made the most sense for
him financially. Can't fault him for that."
