LOS ANGELES -- Some players like time with the camera. But not this kind.
Phoenix guard Leandro Barbosa went careening out of bounds with 7:40 left in
Wednesday's 124-112 loss to the Lakers in Game 2 of the Western Conference
finals at the Staples Center. The back of his head banged against a camera
lens, and Barbosa had to leave the game with a laceration.
Barbosa wanted to return. But doctors, after putting in five stitches,
told him he was done for the night.
"It was bad because I wanted to stay in the game, and I had to leave,''
Barbosa, who scored three points in 12 minutes, told FanHouse. "The doctors
didn't let me come back in. ... Bang on the head. They said for me to stay in
the locker room. ... They just asked me how I felt, and I said, 'I have a
little sore on the head.' So they said, 'So you stay here.' "
Doctors wanted to take no risks with Barbosa's head injury. But he doesn't
believe there's any chance he will miss Sunday's Game 3 in Phoenix.
"Not at all. I definitely be OK probably [Thursday],'' said Barbosa, who said
he was still feeling a "little sore'' about an hour after the hit.
After the game, a photographer approached Barbosa and said the photographer
whose lens Barbosa hit felt bad and offered an apology. With the incident
obviously an accident, the gracious Barbosa accepted it.
Barbosa, whose Suns trailed 101-95 when he departed and lost a player who has
a career three-point percentage of nearly 40, said he knew immediately he had
hit a camera. Asked how it felt he said, "Not good.''
Barbosa, though, said he felt good enough to play. But doctors were taking no
chances.
