Who is the leader?
The Pacers talked through their troubles -- loudly -- in the locker room
following their 112-95 loss to the Rockets at the Toyota Center.
The Pacers kept the locker room closed longer than normal after the game
until peace was restored. Yelling could be heard in the hall.
Vogel
"Sometimes we can lose our mental focus and get off track a little bit,"
forward Danny Granger said. "I think that's where some of the older guys
have to try to get us back on track."
"At some point, we're going to meet up and talk some things out, because
too many things are sliding right now and we have a real tough month
ahead of us and we need to get some things taken care of," Hibbert said.
"We have to accept responsibility for our own house," Pacers swingman
Dahntay Jones said. "We need to get our house in order. We need to find
out if we want to win. Do we want to just play and not worry about wins?
Do we want to go to the playoffs? We have to find what that is and work
toward a common goal."
It started in the first half when veteran Jeff Foster did a poor job
hiding his frustration with the constant defensive breakdowns. My man
Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle described it best, saying it
looked like Foster was ready to strangle somebody. The Rockets were
having a field day offensively at the expense of the Pacers' poor defense.
Dahntay Jones finally couldn’t take it anymore in the fourth quarter.
As the coaching staff stood on the court talking, Jones was in the huddle
going off over their constant defensive problems. Foster had to pull
Jones back.
The Pacers don't have a player who will stand up in the locker room and get
the attention of his teammates.
Granger, the team's leading scorer, has never embraced that role. Veteran
Jeff Foster is not outspoken, though he is active on the court.
James Posey, who has won NBA titles with Boston and Miami, was one of the
defensive leaders earlier in the season, but he has played little the past
month. T.J. Ford has become a fixture on the inactive list.
Point guard T.J. Ford, who was inactive for the game, walked out the locker
room shaking his head after the arguments.
Vogel, a mild-mannered person who doesn't berate his players, must get his
players back on the same page if they are to stay on track.
Coach Vogel, here comes your next challenge.
