Pacers need to decide which way to proceed
溜馬需要決定用哪種方式重返榮耀
Little more than two weeks before the Feb. 21 NBA trade deadline, the Indiana
Pacers are standing at a major philosophical crossroads in the history of
their franchise.
距離交易期限剩下不到2個星期，溜馬正處於隊史上的十字路口。
Here's the decision that must be made, if not before the deadline, then this
summer:

Do the Pacers keep waiting for Jermaine O'Neal to get healthy and hold out
hope of a late-season surge -- or at least a far better season next year?

Or do the Pacers say, "Look, we're going nowhere with O'Neal and Jamaal
Tinsley, let's commit ourselves to a program of salary dumping and embark on

If you've read this column before, you know my answer.

I understand that Larry Bird doesn't want to throw up his hands and lose;
that's not what the guy is about. And I understand why Jim O'Brien wouldn't
have much interest in losing 50 games for two, three years or more.

That's why it's up to the team's owners, specifically Herb Simon, to step in
and say what needs to be said: The Pacers need to tear it down and build it
back up again.

What? O'Neal, who's been hurt the past three years, is suddenly going to grow
a new pair of knees? The real issue is not whether the Pacers move him, but
when. Right now, his value is diminished, as low as it has ever been, so it
might make sense to wait until the summer. Either way, he's got to go.

And then there's Tinsley. Let's be honest: He could remake himself in the

of him won't change.

I hear all the counterarguments to tearing down and rebuilding.

I hear how a lot of teams get lousy on purpose and remain lousy for a lot
longer than they originally planned. Getting worse is no guarantee that
you'll get significantly better.

But here's my argument: The teams who get bad and stay bad for too long are,
by and large, owned and/or run by knuckleheads. The Pacers, last I checked,
were owned by the Simons and run by Larry Bird and Donnie Walsh. Despite some
recent missteps, I still have faith that they wouldn't allow them to remain
lousy for very long.

Here's the other argument I hear against a raze-and-rebuild policy: "The fans
wouldn't show up to watch them lose.''

I believe this is a complete miscalculation. I believe that while fans want
wins first and foremost, they also want hope. While the current team plays
hard and plays a very entertaining offensive style of basketball, fans don't
have the sense the Pacers are building toward anything.

The empty seats at the fieldhouse tell the story. Part of it is that the team

people don't like Tinsley and they're never going to like Tinsley. Most of
it, though, is that fans don't see this team being any better than an eighth
seed, this year or any year.

I believe strongly that this hoops-savvy city would embrace a rebuilding
team, even a bad young team that is in the process of starting over. All the
Pacers would have to do is be honest: "We were spinning our wheels, we need
to move in another direction and we believe you will support us.''

Consider Saturday's opponent, the Portland Trail Blazers. Like the Pacers,
the Blazers were not only declining on the court, but alienating their
once-fervid fan base with off-court problems. They cleaned house, got rid of
Bonzi Wells and traded Rasheed Wallace and Zach Randolph. It took awhile --
they missed the playoffs four consecutive years -- but they drafted well and
made smart trades, and now they have a bright future.

I understand, it's not easy, dumping high-dollar players with diminished
value -- read: O'Neal and Tinsley.

But it's something the Pacers have to do, something they can do as long as
they make cap flexibility a higher priority than equal value.
Somebody tell me, how else are the Pacers going to get out of this mess?

It's not like O'Neal is going to do the organization a giant favor and decide
to opt out after this season. He's not crazy. There's only one place he's
going to make $40 million the next two years, and that's here. He isn't
leaving unless Bird, who he distrusts because of the Isiah Thomas firing,
sends him on his way.
小歐不會傻到動用PO，只有這裡他未來2年可以拿到40M。
除非大鳥由於笑笑湯的Rumor傳言交易掉小歐。
Over time, sure, the Pacers could get back into this top-heavy Eastern
Conference playoff race. Maybe O'Neal returns, although you know he's not
going to kill himself to rush back. Maybe Tinsley stays healthy. Maybe they
combine with Mike Dunleavy, who's having a breakout season, and Kareem Rush,
who's been a huge addition, and they make things a little interesting.
Still, they are going to need to go 20-11 down the stretch just to get to
.500.
在這期間，溜馬可以重回季後賽(搞笑東區!)，
可能小歐回歸blabla，可能丁丁維持健康blabla，但是要回到5成勝率需要20勝11敗。
It's time to start over. Now. This summer. Whenever.
