Q. Why is Stephen Jackson perceived to be so disliked in Indiana? I admit at
times he takes more shots than he should when they are not falling, but isn't
that what a true shooter is supposed to do to a point? It is very frustrating
to see the lack of support he gets because he only missed one game this season
and played too many to count with nagging injuries. (From Brian in Fort Wayne,

A. There's no question about Jackson's toughness or competitive fire. He
demonstrated throughout this season, while battling hand and ankle ailments,
he's willing to give up his body for the team. But he struggled with a number
of issues, some beyond his control, others completely within his grasp, that
have led to a problem with how he is perceived.

Too often, he lets his competitive fire rage into a destructive force. He
becomes obsessed with officiating, tends to fall into individual duels with
opponents and angrily objects just about every time he is removed from the
game. These were all traits he showed in varying degrees in 2004-05 but this
past season, his on-court behavior declined with his performance. He just
didn't play well enough to earn the benefit of the doubt.

Part of the problem came with stepping into Reggie Miller's position and the
pressure and analysis that invited. Following a legend is never an easy job
because there often is an impossibly high standard. But Jackson made it harder
on himself by appearing to model himself as the anti-Reggie. He played with a
chip on his shoulder all year, essentially daring the fans to dislike him.
Many have taken him up on that offer. And he took things another step in the
playoff series with the Nets, criticizing rookie Danny Granger's defense on
Vince Carter and questioning unnamed teammates' willingness to play hurt.

The odd thing about this situation is that Jackson easily is one of the most
likable players on the roster, with a quick wit and an engaging, playful
personality. For whatever reason, he has chosen not to reveal this as his
on-court persona. He'd rather show a scowl than a smile. He also has a great
deal of talent that, if properly applied, could forge a player approaching
All-Star levels.

In other words, he possesses what it takes not only to be very good, but
beloved. It's up to him to decide if either of those goals is important enough
to merit genuine introspection and change. Pacers fans, more than any others
I've been around in my professional lifetime, truly want to like the players.
In this case, it's not up to the fans to give Jackson a chance; that's been
done. Now, it's up to Jackson.
