Barring an unforeseen development, the 35-year-old will join the team by Monday. Williams informed Griz management of his decision Wednesday night while the team played on the road against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Orlando Magic waived Williams on Jan. 26. Williams and the Magic agreed to part ways over lack of playing time. He became a fourth-string player after Orlando acquired Gilbert Arenas in a trade with Washington. However, Williams is expected to immediately compete with Griz rookie Greivis Vasquez for minutes behind starting point guard Mike Conley. Memphis wanted to claim Williams off waivers before he became an unrestricted free agent last weekend. Williams asked the Grizzlies to pass apparently because of his doubts about playing at all. Williams is now said to want to play beyond this season. The Griz pursued Williams at the behest of team owner Michael Heisley, whose reverence for the veteran can be traced to Memphis acquiring him from Sacramento in a 2001 trade. Williams played four seasons with the Griz. He participated in two of the franchise's three playoff series and then was dealt to Miami on the eve of the 2005-06 season.
