Bob Vander Weide: Expect to see more Brandon Bass next season I had a nice conversation with Magic Bob Vander Weide _ now the chief executive officer and vice chairman of the franchise _ following Wednesday’s press conference. Glib and insightful as always, Vander Weide addressed the team’s style of play last season. Not surprisingly, Magic fans can expect some changes. As many people have barked about in columns, blogs and casual conversations, expect to see Brandon Bass get a lot more playing time at power forward [four slot], a switch that will allow Rashard Lewis to shift to the small forward [three] slot in the lineup. The organization _ including coach Stan Van Gundy _ seems to have a twinge of regret that Bass didn’t get enough playing time in the regular season to be effective in the playoffs, especially since teammates didn’t have a feel for that particular lineup. It hurt them against a physical and bigger Boston team. “Having Dwight [Howard] we’re obviously going to play inside-out,” Vander Weide said. “And Dwight at his age is only going to improve. Find something 8-to-10 feet from the basket that works. That will come. It’s happened with every big. As that improvement happens, shooters around the court will have space, that’s going to be our game. “I think the answer to your question really is ‘how do you keep improving defensively?’ ….I think it’s all about defense to be honest with you. Boston played a phenomenal, fierce defensive game and they did things that would be out of the ordinary _ make Matt Barnes shoot jump shots. Things like that didn’t play to our strengths. But we still have the pieces to win a championship. “In fact Chris Duhon and Quentin Richardson will make us even stronger and I think you will see Stan doing things differently. I think you will see him find against different matchups a way to play Brandon, move Rashard to the three, and do some interesting things there. We all learned. In our post-season conversation, Stan said he should have practiced Rashard more at the three because on the baseline he’s probably the best post-up three when he plays that position, although we love him at four the majority of the time. If you don’t practice it, you don’t play it.” The Magic will practice it, and play it this season. Solid move.
