[新聞] Orlando Magic try to figure out what went wrong

J.J. Redick was the first to speak in the Orlando Magic's
locker room Wednesday night after the Magic lost to the
Cleveland Cavaliers. According to Magic Coach Stan Van
Gundy, he reminded the team they just weren't very good.
"He was absolutely right," Van Gundy said. "We have to be
honest with ourselves, we're not very good right now.
Forget all the excuses and everything else, to a man, and
as a group and as a coaching staff -- I mean, no question,
I didn't have anything tonight either, we're just not very
good."
"And that could be a very good starting point if we're
honest enough and we quit with all the excuses and we quit
with thinking that it's just going to come as you go."
In both Sunday's 28-point loss to Oklahoma City and
Wednesday night's loss to Cleveland, Orlando fell into a
double digit deficit early and couldn't find its way out.
Now the team has to figure out why that happened.
Defense has been Van Gundy's key point of emphasis for
weeks. He hasn't been happy with it all season. On
Wednesday night he called on Dwight Howard and Jameer
Nelson to lead the change.
Van Gundy said point guards have had big games opposite
Nelson, mentioning Russell Westbrook, Raymond Felton and
Cleveland's Mo Williams, who made all nine of his shot
attempts in the first half.
As for Howard, who led the league in rebounds and blocks
last year, Van Gundy expects to see more of that.
"I mean the guy averaged 14 a game last year," Van Gundy
said. "Go check the numbers the last five or six games,
he's not rebounding, he's blocked one shot in the last
three games." (這段原文打成魔獸說,應該是大范說)
Wednesday night Howard had 11 points, seven rebounds and
one blocked shot. Howard, who said he plays best when he
starts games in a defensive flow, believes seven games into
the season, it's too early to draw conclusions about his
defense.
"I know my defense, my rebounding is not where I'd like it
to be," Howard said. " It's just a phase... Everything is
not going to be great every single night. It's gonna
happen."
After Orlando lost by 28 points to Oklahoma City, Dwight
Howard talked about players hanging their heads when shots
weren't falling.
He brought up the same point after Orlando's nine-point
loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The final margin was nine
points, but the game was much more lopsided.
Vince Carter said the way to crawl out of double-digit
deficits is effort.
So how do you fix a lack of effort?
"I don't know," Vince Carter said. "I don’t know. It’s
hard to answer right now. Regardless of what it is we have
to figure it out."
Jameer Nelson pointed to mistakes.
"When we got ... every guy on the team making two or three
mistakes that's. 20 or 30 mistakes," Nelson said. "You can
put yourself in a hole, continue to get better.
"It’s a will as an individual. Can’t point the finger at
one person. Everybody has to have the will to get back into
the game, to want to get that rebound, to want to get the
loose ball."
For Marcin Gortat, an explanation only took two words.
"No defense," he said.
