Last night was not by any measure a good free throw shooting night for Dwight
Howard. He made just six of 16 attempts, shooting an abysmal 37.5 percent in
Orlando's 117-87 win over Indiana.

That's about half as many percentage points as he was hoping to achieve from

Howard attributed his free-throw troubles to overthinking. He said he worked
on free throw shooting more than any other skill during the offseason and
often has success when he's shooting them in non-game situations -- before,
after or during practice.

Because of his struggles, Howard has been hacked and hacked and hacked in
this season's exhibition games. He's attempted 57 free throws so far, second
only to Denver's Carmelo Anthony, who has attempted 59. Anthony, however, has
made 79.7 percent of those attempts while Howard is shooting 54.4 percent.

those players are shooting better than 80 percent, including New Orleans
point guard Chris Paul at 89.6 percent.

"Right now that's pretty much the strategy," Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy said.
