[外電] Where there’s a Will, There’s a J

Jason Kidd had a stretch of game for the ages in the third quarter against
the Washington Wizards on Sunday. With The Nets down 57-49, on the brink of
losing the momentum that they had begun to build after the all-star break,
the captain stepped it up. Kidd would single-handedly spearhead a 19-5 Nets
run in which he accounted for every basket. Those who know his attributes
well might not bat an eye at the fact that Kidd led his team on a sustained
run. It’s the way the run was constructed that is astounding and clearly
shows the future possibilities still left in the 33, going-on-34, year-old’s
game.
Jason hit a three at the 9:58 mark; a three at the 9:20 mark; a three at the
8:53 mark; assisted on an alley-oop to Hassan Adams at the 9:26 mark and a
Mikki Moore fast break dunk at the 7:51 mark; and hit another pair of threes
at the 7:19 and 6:49 marks. His 5 three-pointers and 2 assists took the game
from an eight point deficit to a six point advantage in a period of three
minutes.
“I felt like Vince there for a minute,” said Kidd. “Being able to shoot
the three and for it to go in.”
It is not innate talent that allowed Kidd to shoot his team to that kind of
run - some people actually say that his shot is the weakness in his game. It
is purely and un-magically, hard work.
…And a little help from his friends.
Since early December, Kidd has competed with Nets guard Eddie House in a
friendly, but competitive, post-practice shooting game.

games.)
“Eddie is considered one of the best in the league, so I wanted to join him,
” says Kidd. We started a game, put a dollar on it, it became something that
caught my attention and I just wanted to be a part of it.”
Kidd, the preeminent passer in the game, sometimes unselfish to a fault, has
made it a point this year to sure up his shooting. “There are a lot of
shooters on the team. I wanted to join in and have some fun with those guys,”
Kidd reasoned, with a smirk.
Lawrence Frank says that Kidd “has put more time into his jump shot this
year than any other time.”
To maintain his form and perfect his stroke, Kidd has worked under the
watchful eye of Nets shooting coach, Bob Thate.
“Bob is always trying to get my arm up higher, he is always talking about
being able to get it up to the top, and just being more compact, so it’s an
easier shot now and I can shoot it farther. I don’t know if that’s
dangerous, but it definitely is fun.”
Even with the help from coaches and teammates, it still comes down to the
player wanting it, and being hungry to succeed and improve. With his rib and
back ailments, the Nets have been trying to minimize Kidd’s practice time.
Still, the captain comes early, stays late, practices, and gets in extra
shooting.
“I think it’s a great example for all our guys,” says Frank. “You reap
what you sow. You put your time in, you’re going to put yourself in the best
possible position to improve and get better as a player. It’s not always
instant gratification.”
Coach Frank also believes that Kidd continually works hard on his shot to
compensate for concessions that will inevitably come with age.
“I think as a player, as you get older, some of your strengths, you have to
compensate. Jordan is one of the great examples of all time. I think Jason
understands that he wants to play, and he wants to continue playing beyond
his contract. He is still very fast with the ball but he knows that as you
get older that there are certain things you will not be able to do at the
same speed. So his ability to improve his shot makes him an even better
player. Because his intelligence gets better, his basketball IQ, his tone, I
just think he gets it more so than anyone in that what does it take to be a
hall of fame player and maintain and play at such a high level. There are few
that are able to do it, and he is one of them. Payton, even at 36, was able
to play at a high level. Stockton was able to go at a very high level. Magic
was on that path. Isiah if it wasn’t for injuries. I think Jason wants to be
amongst that group. And to do that, you constantly have to work on your game.
”
Kidd, currently in his 13th season, admits that he wishes he started spending
the amount of time he currently does on perfecting his jump shot earlier in
his career. “When you’re young and naive, you always feel you have to time
to work on whatever you need to work on.”
Kidd is happy working on his game and says that it’s fun, for a change,
being the open guy on the other end of the pass. However, even with all the
work on his shot, he still finds himself a couple of dollars short and his
pockets a little lighter from the daily Eddie House shootings games.
“Eddie can tell you how much I owe him. I’m down. The last two days he has
been hot; he does it in practice, I try to save it for the game.”
