http://ppt.cc/-WKS Yankees nominated for MLB-best 17 GIBBYs Jeter, Cano, Rivera in running for two year-ending awards each For the New York Yankees, a season without a World Series championship is labeled somewhere between "a disappointment" (as part owner Hal Steinbrenner described 2011) and "a failure" (team president Randy Levine's adjective of choice). But though a loss to the formidable Detroit Tigers in the American League Division Series cost the Yankees a chance to bring home their 28th world championship this year, we would be remiss not to acknowledge the brilliant individual performances and spine-tingling milestones that the American League East champions produced this past season. This year's Greatness in Baseball Yearly (GIBBY) Awards will highlight these achievements. Yankees players are nominated for all but one of Major League Baseball's 11 year-end individual awards, with Bronx Bombers claiming four of the seven nominations for Best Moment, along with a nomination for Best Performance. Even the Yankees' fans were recognized, with a military veteran's snag of a foul ball earning a nod for Best Fan Moment. Major League Baseball's A-listers will take home GIBBYs trophies -- the ultimate honors of baseball's awards season -- based on votes by fans at MLB.com, media, front-office personnel and MLB alumni. The 2011 GIBBYs feature nominees in 19 categories. Individual honors will go to the top everyday player, starting pitcher, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout player, comeback player, defensive player, wow factor, manager, executive and postseason performer. GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's best play, moment, performance, oddity, walk-off, fan moment and postseason moment from MLB.com's Must C highlight reels. Fan voting ends Dec. 4, and you can vote up to 25 times per category. Winners will be announced Dec. 16 from 9-11 p.m. ET on MLB Network and MLB.com. Shortstop Derek Jeter, second baseman Robinson Cano and closer Mariano Rivera lead the GIBBYs charge for the Yankees, with each of the three garnering two nominations. Jeter, of course, produced the season's greatest thrill on July 9, when he became the first Yankee to reach 3,000 hits with a blast to left field off Tampa Bay's David Price. His milestone hit netted him a Best Moment nomination, and the Captain is also nominated for Best Performance for his 5-for-5 output on that day. Cano is nominated for the Wow Factor award for his 46 doubles, tied for third-best in the American League, and the effortless way he fielded his position. With his father doing the pitching, Cano created one of the great lasting memories in the history of the Home Run Derby, when he smacked 12 home runs in the final round to top Adrian Gonzalez in Arizona -- earning himself a nomination for Best Moment. Cano's propensity to go yard also helped the Yankees earn another Best Moment nomination on Aug. 25, when he, Russell Martin and Curtis Granderson teamed up to make the Yankees the first team in Major League history to hit three grand slams in a single game. At age 41, Rivera added another chapter to his extraordinary career by posting an ERA below 2.00 for the eighth time in the past nine seasons. A nominee for 2011's Best Closer award, Rivera cemented his case for best closer of all time on Sept. 19 when he notched career save No. 602 to become the all-time leader in that category.
