New York Yankees waste no time, sign 2011 first draft pick Dante Bichette Jr.
CHICAGO - The Yankees wasted no time in getting Dante Bichette Jr. signed,
inking their first draft pick this year to a $750,000 deal Saturday.
Bichette was taken with the 51st pick, a compensatory selection the Yankees
received when Javier Vazquez signed with the Marlins last winter. The Yankees
didn't have a first-rounder in the draft, sending it to the Rays after
signing Rafael Soriano as a Type A free agent.
Bichette has reported to the Yankees' complex in Tampa and will join the Gulf
Coast Yankees when their season opens Monday.
"We were excited to be able to draft Dante and are even more excited to get
him signed," said Damon Oppenheimer, the Yankees' VP of amateur scouting.
"Coming to an agreement this quickly will allow Dante to get a full season
under his belt in 2011, and gets him ahead of the curve in many ways."
Bichette, a third baseman and son of former big-leaguer Dante Bichette,
batted .640 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI in 30games as a senior at Orangewood
Christian School in Maitland, Fla.
"I think he's going to be a good player," said Joe Girardi, a close friend
and former teammate of the elder Bichette. "He's learned a lot from his
father, the young man has got talent, he's a student of the game like his
father was. That's the reason we drafted him."
MONEY BALL
The Yankees may find themselves in the market for a starting pitcher between
now and the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but multiple team sources said
the team had "zero" interest in Cubs pitchers Carlos Zambrano and Ryan
Dempster.
In addition to their on-field performance this season - Zambrano is 5-4 with
a 4.59 ERA and Dempster is 5-6 with a 5.46 ERA - the Yankees have no desire
to take on their hefty salaries. Zambrano is making $17.8 million this
season, with another $18 million due in 2012. Dempster is earning $13.5
million in 2011, although he has a $14 million option for next year.
With Phil Hughes officially beginning his rehab assignment Sunday and Bartolo
Colon expected back in the next of couple weeks, Girardi isn't even sure the
Yankees will need to add a starter.
"If you get Hughesie back and he's healthy, throwing like he was last year,
it really improves our staff with Bartolo as well," Girardi said. "You don't
know what's going to happen in the next three or four months to all the
starters combined, so it's hard for me to predict what we're going to need to
do. The hopeful thing is that everyone stays healthy, but you can't predict
that."
GLOVE STORY
Not much about Brian Gordon's journey to the majors has been typical. But as
rare as it is for a 32-year-old to sign with the Yankees on a Thursday
morning and start for them that afternoon, the glove he had on his left hand
was even rarer.
Gordon's glove is made up entirely of microfibers, while the laces are made
from parachute rope. While other big-leaguers have some synthetic material
incorporated into their traditional leather gloves, Gordon is believed to be
the first major-leaguer to use a leather-free mitt.
"I think it freaks people out because it looks different than the leather
gloves that everybody is so comfortable with," Gordon said. "Looks aren't
really anything that I'm interested in; it's the way it feels on the mound."
The glove, which has the look and feel of suede, is made by Scott Carpenter,
who runs the Carpenter Trade Co. in Cooperstown, N.Y. A minor-league teammate
of Gordon's showed him the glove last season, so Gordon reached out to
Carpenter to express interest in using one, telling Carpenter he'd be happy
to do so to help get the word out.
The glove is custom-made for each user, starting with a mold of the player's
hand that makes it unnecessary to break it in like a leather glove.
"As a pitcher, that's your only tool. It may as well fit you," said Gordon,
who noted that it's five to 10ounces lighter than a traditional glove. "I
know it's only a matter of ounces, but in the long run, with a ball coming at
you at over 100 mph, you'd want something light to protect yourself with."
So will Gordon try to inspire his new teammates to make the switch?
"I'll answer questions about it, but I'm not going to push it on anyone," he
said.

洋基以75萬簽下了今年第51順位選到的 Dante Bichette Jr
文中提到洋基是否考慮交易Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster
