Mark Teixeira thinks spending more time in the cage, at the expense of the time
in the gym, will be the key to a more productive 2011 season.
Teixeira, who suffered a hamstring injury in the ALCS that ended his postseason
early, has been swinging the bat since the end of December. "At the end of the
day, no matter how long I’ve been playing baseball, I’m still a right-handed
hitter who switch hits," Teixeira said. "I’ve had to work harder at it (from
the left side)… That muscle memory is very, very important. My attitude this
year is, if I have a half hour, instead of putting it in the gym lifting
weight, put it in the cage and make sure my left-handed swing is consistent."
It sounds like Teixeira will remain the Yankees' No. 3 hitter this season,
though Robinson Cano might be a better fit in that spot.
