[閒聊] Yankees Sign LHPs Neal Cotts and Daniel Martinez
The Yankees are looking to sign another lefty reliever for their bullpen to
go alongside Boone Logan this year, but like any smart team they know signing
a good reliever is like catching lightning in a bottle. So they are
stockpiling backup options.
The Yankees have signed LHP Neal Cotts and Daniel Martinez, according to a
pair of tweets by Baseball America’s Matt Eddy.
Cotts, who will be 31, missed most of 2009 because of Tommy John sugery and
all of 2010 because of hip surgery. Martinez, a 20-year-old Venezuelan, has
never pitched in America before and was actually cut by the Reds back in July.
Neither are exactly promising and won’t stop the Yankees from pursuing other
options, but with relievers sometimes you just throw a bunch at the wall and
hope one or two stick. Besides, Triple-A Scranton is going to need somebody
to replace Royce Ring who left via free agency.
Cotts is obviously the most likely of the two to actually pitch in the
majors. He’s pitched in parts of seven seasons and put together a great
season in 2005 for the Cubs. That year he pitched in 69 games over 60.1
innings with a 1.94 ERA. The biggest problem with him though is that he’s
actually better at getting righties out than lefties.
